yeah, same. there is no like place we go to collectively heal and grieve. our interactions being only on social media platforms is the thorn in online communities sides. when we log off we are alone. its genuinely hard to balance.

nooop id keep almost all avis shown all the time (selectively checking stats on ppl and hiding heavier ones) so i didnt get crazy lag spikes every time ppl move thru the cull zone. what i would do is fully nuke my resolution tho

As I look from a distance, I see similar themes popping up. PLUR. Abuse. Witch hunts. Ego. The issues are typically caused by few individuals, but those that do have echo chambers that seemingly radiate through the scene. I hope we can all work together to rekindle that spark of DJing - fun!

this cycle is damaging. This unavoidable truth that we have seen time and time again of: Popular club owner flys out victims to SA them and abusese their power to keep them quiet; is causing a collective trauma that cancel culture & social media statements will NOT protect future victims from.

the current structure, that i and others have had to resort to for varying levels of abusive behavior, ie. Making a doc that you hope enough people care about and take you seriously; is a structurally weak & puts victims at risk by outing their most vulnerable and traumatic moments publicly

structures for accountability need to be made in the vrc club scene. real ones, that protect victims. there are un-deniable patterns of abuse specific to this niche that are causing people real harm, both publicly and privately looking the other way when people raise concerns, makes you complicit

social alienation, to cause someone to feel isolated, excluded, or estranged, (esp in “radical leftist” spaces) speaks to a low capacity for conflict and only hurts the movement you so loudly claim to be fighting for. conflict and repair are essential for the world we are trying to build

Agreed. Having millions paying attention to you all at once is MASSIVELY overrated. Personally, I'm a big fan/advocate (and minor example) of the 1,000 True Fans model of survival. kk.org/thetechnium/... You don't need to go viral to survive as a creative. In fact, I'd argue you don't want that.

In conclusion, I am grateful to VRChat for being a place I could go when I was a prisoner in my own home- but if I could do it again, I would not get sucked into an an echo chamber of performance politics. I wish I could still give my labor to the space because It really does deserve it.

MY POINT IS I want more than anything for the VRChat community to be a sanctuary to those who don't have that IRL Furthermore I want the community to name the AMAZING opportunity VRChat gives us for social rehabilitation and as a tool to be used as the first step to transitioning into IRL community

But it worked out that I got off VRChat, Discord, & Bsky because balance was direly needed for the sake of my mental health. I was so "in it" that I couldn't see that my engagement in the space was destroying me. I was living in conflict with my values, contributing to the exact thing I'm against.

I've since pivoted to focusing on local community activism. This feels much more fulfilling and worth-wile The niches in VRC that I called home are no longer available to me for the reasons I stated above- I played a role in this outcome, but ultimately I didn't deserve this outcome. No one does

I tangentially *did* do honest work and attempts at building and trying to normalize real structures of support like mutual aid, accessibility, emotional support, weekly meetings, events naming real world happenings, etc (Two things can be true type beat, black and white thinking can fuck off)

In this time with these groups, I contributed to group think, cancel culture, in-group/out-groups, etc. I caved to the tantalizing social pressure to perform as a member of the group, to have a good reputation, to position myself to feel important, loved, and to feel needed.
