As far as mammals go, this is very rare as usually subspecies mesh very quickly and readily almost anywhere else. But, geography and isolation makes that difficult here.

Local fox fact, there are three red fox subspecies in Washington: two introduced, one native. The introduced species only live in the lowlands and the native species in alpine environments. None live in middle altitudes, so the subspecies never inter-breed and are still genetically distinct.
