…she’d come to believe that the “purpose” of suffering is that we can take what we’ve been through and use it to help others. That that’s the whole point. Helping others. Being for other people what we wish we’d had ourselves. Changing the world in small ways, through kindness, one person at a time.

Today is the anniversary of the assault that almost killed me at 20. I used to spend this day in grief, mourning who I’d been and who I could have become. This year, I had to be reminded of what this day means to me. It had become just another day. And that, to me, is the ultimate victory.
