every "ancient tradition" was invented between 1848-1870 and every "modern perversion" is so ancient as to predate writing

Mangrove trees are of a similar level of geometric pleasingness but they're always growing in deep stinky mud so it's a commitment. Sea grapes are *nice*. They want you to climb them and they made you a snack.

You'd think banyans would be better but the aerial roots are always full of ants and stuff. A mature sea grape sprawls at delightful odd angles and has smooth, hard bark like a natsutsubaki or a sarusuberi. They grow in sand and cast deep shade. 10/10 would live in if I had a big one.

Went to the houseplant store for a pot saucer and they had what I at first thought from across the store was a funny-looking fiddleleaf fig but it was a SEA GRAPE!!! Sea grapes are a beach-growing tree native to Florida and the Caribbean and I remember them fondly as nature's best climbing trees.

Today's project. Really happy to have been able to make this out of paulownia/kiri and not plywood, the match with the original interior is flawless.

The royal family of the marsh - the largest Trumpeter swan family I've ever seen - 7 cygnets. I can remember when there were no swans in this marsh and this year we had 3 families. #birds
A family of trumpeter swans swim in the sunlight of a fall marsh morning. The adults (white are in the middle of their seven grey cygnets) Two have their bums in the air as they forage under the water.

I'm dying laughing at how the cat has conformed to her flower shaped bed today
A white cat is sleeping curled up in a med that has five fluffy white lobes of a flower petal, the cat has half her face peeking upwards and otherwise has filled the pentagonal space in the center of the bed completely

My mom was old enough to be the mother of the other parents AND is perceptably autistic AND would show up in scrubs, and I was already performing Little Girl behavior wrong. Formative memories of sitting in her lap in a circle made of white Florida housewife mob disgust.

This Indigenous People's Day, I wanted to promote the incredible handmade leather work by my good friend Tommy, Native Necromancy on fb, @amealformaggots on insta. He is Lenape of the Turtle Clan. You can see his work in person at both Gonzo Glass Studio and Cerridwen's Hearth in Mount Holly NJ.

Rounded off so it's like a quarter of a circle. The bigger the corner radius, the more rounded the box/brick/pane of glass/etc.

They sell paulownia at the home center now??? I could make a real, painlessly carryable Medicine Seller box to replace my award-winning oak plywod one, which looks amazing but weighs like a whole-ass human child.

What may possibly be my last stationary haul from Hands. I can't believe it's closing in three months, it's so sad and empty TAT Thank you @occultbeast.bsky.social for the brand recommendation, it's such a nice gentle colorspace.

Now that the new dining table can hold all the medicines, cables, and stationary, I can use the antique Japanese parlour cabinet for its intended purpose. But since I get more bags than looseleaf, I'd rather have the box than the traditional canisters.

I suddenly remembered that I used to have a lovely clear acrylic teabag organizer and I dont remember if it broke or if I gave it to someone as a parting gift but I miss it and it looks like thia design no longer exists, hellfire and damnation.

I decided to walk to the 24 hour grocery store and it was Bad 😬 My brain has forgotten how to take normal full-length strides, I had to shuffle along for the first 5 miles before my hip flexors loosened up even slightly and I never did get up to my NYC walking speed.

Last straw was seeing that they're doing... a Toyota collab? With real cars? Hey joseimukei game y'all heard about the gendered wage gap??? Gross! It would have been an amazing Tomica collab, but I guess they are just maneuvering to increas shareholder value or whatever *cat vomiting noises*

The Vocaloids and Rider haven't done anything wrong, everyone else has been tainted by collabs (the JINJA HONCHO? /REALLY/?) or by being a shallow promotional effort for really crappy money-grubbing followup works.

It's probably time to sell the last of my non-Busou Shinki figure collection. I could use the bookshelf space and I'm existentially disgusted with their associated IPs.

Stickers aren't big enough from across the room, I tried that 2 years ago and it just looked like bugs T_T I don't think the paper will take very wet mediums... airbrushed watercolor, perhaps...

O whimsical internet friends, how do I decorate this boring-yet-functional MUJI wall calender??? I used to get beautiful Cavallini Paper calendars every year but have been dragooned into ADHD accessibility hell since we moved here, and I hate looking at it.

I think you can make an argument for ideas of cuteness being part of the greater project of Japaneseness being defined as deliberately contrary to the Other. They don't call the "suitable for people over 5'0" shovel a "modern" shovel or a "long" shovel, they call it an AMERICAN shovel.

Linden @kirindensetsu.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Sorry, that's under-emphasizing the shovel problem: the longest shovel you can buy at most hardware stores is dimensionally identical to the Yayoi period equivalent, I had to go outside and scream when I saw it for the first time. The dining table was only 65cm.

Drinking tea sitting at my correctly sized table in my correctly sized chair instead of the tiny apartment furniture, my skeleton feels so nice TAT I think furniture here must be like shovels where the dimensional standard was set a hundred years ago and never updated for post-famine heights.

The kotatsu dining table and its chairs have been banished to Toyama, and the IKEA Norden with its many junk drawers has been resurrected! Note the wheels. My old American one had a nicer finish, the poly on this is kinda milky, but it's tough as hell and I'm sure the western sun will mellow it out.

The best part is because the undyed wool is ivory and not white, it makes the off-white metal cabinets look nice instead of dingy vs the bright white wallpaper and appliances, like how three shades of non-matching black looks okay.

The floor is a thin layer of vinyl over concrete and it's miserable in winter, esp since I have to do a lot of crafting stuff on the floor. I was considering getting a "hot carpet" which is like an electic blanket but they're all fleecy polyester and expensive to run.

I found a gigantic wool area rug in the clearance and returns bin at IKEA last night and it's so cozy I have settled down on the kitchen floor and can't get up. It's 240cm x 170cm and it was marked down from about $400 to about $60.

That video made me tear up. I hope I can give my parents' house and land back to the Wampanoag tribe someday. You want things to go to people who will love them, you know? The man who has right of first refusal on any sale is a terrible person who cuts down sacred trees and loves nothing.

Agreed on the figures. My theory is that it's from Indonesia (Java/Bali) where there's lots of carvers doing exportware with the skill to work in very hard woods, and it was created to order in imitation of Hong Kong pieces.
