And really as someone who more or less liked the game, I don't remember any part of it particularly fondly other than Samus speaking bird or Raven Beak. I do remember Watermelon Samus and thinking "well at least they didn't tack on Ridley for no reason again so I don't leave the game angry"

I had never read it fully before tonight, and seeing those "intestine" rooms again with a critical eye... I never realized how... cynical? desperate? That kind of level design is. I can remember a lot of distinct rooms from most Metroid games (barring 1 cause I mean), but nothing from the MStroids.

Ace Combat 8 completed. Despite some small gameplay and story misgivings, I absolutely loved it. A worthy follow-up to AC7 that incorporated a lot of cinematic elements while still feeling extremely true to the series. I would paint my plane with a lesbian flag and die for Kate.

It is very funny to me the focal point of the trailer is that the game has a grand exchange. Like are they going after economy degenerates and RMT sickos as their primary audience? Sort of bold, but I guess that is a large volume of their players after all.

Jagex really is like me making RPG Maker games when I was 13, constantly starting new projects, getting bored and abandoning them, and then starting another new project that will totally be the NEWEST and BESTESTEST GAME EVER. Maybe this one will have a tick speed faster than a glacier.

Curious if you've ever played Salt and Sanctuary, the ur-"2D Dark Souls". I found some similarities in how the combat and exploration felt, but it definitely seemed like it was importing stuff for no real reason that benefitted the anything (encumbrance, "humanity", etc.)

Dungeon Meshi is probably my favorite modern manga, but the one thing it's missing is at no point is there a later chapter where Marcille & Falin just go to town on each other. I'm talking property damage, mysterious fires, animals howling one town over, etc. It would really have fit the story.

It's a shame because the underlying systems are pretty cool. Demon fusion is much more intuitive and fun to experiment with than mainline (even if negotiation still makes no sense), party building is fun, and the challenge is mostly balanced. If I had to give numbers, 7/10.

The encounter rate is probably why it's remained hidden. I'm loathed to "correct" old games but good fucking god nobody had any clue what they fuck were doing with encounter rates back then. And the game is STILL grindy. Eighth the encounter rate and triple the exp.

Finished: Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible III (SFC). A modest hidden gem of a game. Terrific music, a unique a fun art style, and a surprisingly neat story with a bit of intrigue, even if the writing lapses a. Fucking crazypants insane random encounter rate, up there with Paladin's Quest and BoF2.

Looks like it's a retranslation? (And hopefully fixing Lufia II's bizarre bugs). They weren't like, Breath of Fire 2 bad, but they were still early 90s JRPG translations so this is I think the best possible outcome, because how the hell do you fix Lufia 1's gameplay without just making a new game.

Was wondering why social media was feeling particularly poisonous to me recently, and it turns out when you mute a word on bluesky "forever" that actually means "about a year". I fell into the trap of buying some "How to write compelling fiction" books, which were actually "how to write fiction *to get published*", which is a pretty telling distinction to ignore, or more worryingly, not understand the difference. They still had some good advice, but it was maybe 20%.

I think about the ending of Wind Waker at least once a year, and every year it hits harder than the last. There's irony here to it being in the game everyone hated for prioritizing style over fidelity. Then we got Twilight Princess, a fine game whose ending I have never thought about more than once.
