#OctoberWorldbuilders, hello friends! Alright, it's time for the survival question I promised a few days ago! Tell me how the people who live in your desert actually survive in it. How do they get food and water? What kind of clothes do they wear? How do they stay warm/cool otherwise?

#WIPSnips The word 'wall' appears a bunch in this story, which should be expected in a book about an inn. But while most uses of the word aren't too much about the wall itself, this one is. Here, I discuss the secrets of the inn's walls.
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

The Good Thyme Inn quite literally held secrets galore within its walls. The most extensive overhaul occurred during Marmalade’s tenure as the innmaster, soon after Shallot was born. Shallot had vague memories of the reconstruction, of seeing complex clockwork before they were sealed away behind wood panels, but those memories had formed her image of the inn-world within her mind.
During the reconstruction, hidden nooks had been installed throughout the inn. Small, secret places where one could stash precious items. Marmalade had been fond of hiding coins in odd places for fear of losing everything if bandits came and demanded all the money under her desk. Shallot had once believed her great-aunt was paranoid; bandits never came into town. Until she grew up and realized ‘bandits’ had always been Marmalade’s underhanded way of referring to the baron and his men.

Mornese people are furry in general, so it would be very strange for one of them to be clean shaven 😆 Shallot and Brisket, for reference on what a female and male Mornese look like:

#WIPSnips This is the Good Thyme Inn book, but it's a rare look at what the antagonists are up to! After the death of Lord Velderash (Baron Aleton), his son takes over. Unfortunately, the new Baron Aleton, Lord Mavolo, is young, stupid, and just wants to play with his dogs.
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

“Are you listening to me?” The voice of Mr. Cloth grated on the young man’s ears.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m listening.” Mavolo rolled his eyes while he put his finger near the tail of a dog. He loved how the joyously wagging tail brushed rapidly against him. “I’ll sign all the contracts you want me to sign, just put them on my desk.”
“You will be a baron, Mavolo! You need to read the contracts and determine for yourself if they ought to be signed!”
The young man rose to his feet and glared at his steward. “If I’m a baron, you will call me ‘Your Lordship.’”
Mr. Cloth’s fingers twitched. He was an old man; old enough to Mavolo’s grandfather. Hearing this boy with such a pathetic beard give him such a stupid command vexed him.
“I will call you an imbecile if that’s what you need to hear because right now, that’s all you are. Now, get out of that damned dog pen and come to your office.”

there if I need it! Sometimes I have to worldbuild minutiae specifically for a story. If that happens, I will usually put it in its Scrivener file, but if it becomes relevant enough to go in one of my master Word Docs, I will move it. As an example, some notes on the previous barons of Aleton:
Scalvonian b. 191 Went to war during the War for Munil, lost bitterly, acquired a parasite that made him eat constantly, always tired, and had difficulty having children. He sold the Good Thyme Inn to Yamma in 218 because he needed money to pay his soldiers. The queen was about to have him arrested for failing to pay his soldiers. Died of complications of parasitic infection in 248
Duvela b. 230 Spent much of her life building her coffers so she or her descendants could buy the inn back. She was careful to obey the queen’s laws after her father lost favor with her, and thus never caused problems for Yamma or Marmalade. However, her personal relationship with the queen was rocky at best. She and the queen got into a fierce argument once and their relationship had been tarnished since then. Her death was suspicious, and many believe the queen hired a merchant of dance to kill her. Died in 263, assumed assassinated

Aaaand, everything I just said? That's only for the plot. Character development ideas are kept in their own spot. I often get more ideas as I go that I want to implement in edits. I have a dedicated section for "things to edit in later" which I consult a I edit (my current task for GTI!) Example:
-Shallot sells some of the musical instruments to pay for rent. She’s about to sell the organ when Gene shows up and shows how well he can play. Later, although he doesn’t make enough money to help pay, she decides to keep it because playing the organ makes him happy.

-Grilled and Aubergine initially had a rough relationship. While Grilled did have a crush on him, he was also envious of Gene’s attention from guests and his many skills. He tried to get Gene in trouble once, but Shallot told him not to be That Way
-Likewise, Gene was envious of Grilled because he was already an established and beloved member of the family and he had a natural way of joking around and making food. He also tried to get Grilled in trouble (snitching after the spider incident) and Shallot also told him not to be That Way
-In an attempt for both to not be That Way, they had a talk, Grilled made food for him, and Gene played a song just for him.

When necessary, I will write more detailed bullet points for a scene or an arc and have them on the side in every scene. Here's an example for my Good Thyme Inn wip where I wrote more detailed notes in Scrivener. The notes on the side are in many pages. This one is the start of bullet point #2:
Screenshot of Scrivener showing a manuscript on the left and bullet point notes on the right.

Replying to this one as a QRP because I figured others might be interested in my answer. Hardcore plotter here (though I will gladly adjust my plot as I go if I think of better ideas). I start with a bunch of bullet points in a Word document (see image). This goes on for several pages
Merchants of Dance and Hedonism:

Being born and meeting Requiem
-Tynan born
-Tynan meets their sisters and learns elemental powers
-Tynan goes with Lungi to be added to the grocery register
-At the grocer, Tynan reads their mind and sees many disturbing thoughts including how the man wishes their parents were both dead. Feeling threatened, Tynan goes back to find and kill him. Loyenie finds them and puts restrictions on them regarding who/when they are allowed to kill. She says that only merchants of dance can legally kill people outside of self-defense, and so Tynan gets it in their mind that they must become a dancer.
-Tynan trains to be a merchant of dance and learns the purpose of the dancers and the Derisids

#WIPSnips I shared this one semi-recently, so some of you who actually read these might recognize it. Here's the scene where Cookie thinks about how alchemy is both an art and a science.
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

“Sage, would adding lily petals counteract the Neutral potion?” She asked him, just to be certain. Some alchemy was an art, and one could add ingredients as they pleased to change the flavor or scent. But some alchemy was also a science, and one had to know the exact details of their ingredients if they wanted to make a safe and effective brew.
“It should be fine,” he answered. “Don’t go overboard. One petal per month of dosage will suffice. And don’t let any felines drink it. Lilies are toxic to cats, Nilians, and Wynnles.”
Cookie added three, but those three tiny petals looked so insignificant compared to the whole cauldron. Against her better judgment, she added a fourth. Alchemy was partially an art form, and this was her way of being creative. She couldn’t draw or play an instrument or write poetry, but she could craft a potion that would be beloved by the one she hoped to become better friends with.

#WIPSnips Grilled and Garlic are looking at an alchemy book when they meet an unexpected visitor. A certain woman who snuck in, invisible, and made herself visible to make a deal with the boys... (this woman is Cookie, btw. This is her introductory scene)
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

“We’d love to have a Shroud potion, but we need a Lost potion first. Can you make that one?”
She nodded vigorously. “Oh yes! I brewed one not long ago for myself. This part of Aloutia is a good place to brew Lost. The ingredients are plentiful here. Mm, well, except for one. I may need to scout your markets. I do not think Neuropteran shield caps grow here, though it can’t hurt to check your forest.”
Garlic swallowed frightfully. “Be careful if you go into the forest. It belongs to the baron and his guards might arrest you if they think you’re poaching his game, logging, or collecting illegal plants. Wait, the ingredient isn’t illegal, is it?”
The Homopteran leaned over the table, elbows out at sharp angles. Her arm-strings glistened in the green chandelier light above. The boys imagined she was glaring, but those huge, round compound eyes never changed. Never showed emotion.
“That’s why I use Shroud potions when I travel. Nobody must see me. I am only allowing you to see me now because I saw you poring over that alchemy book and—well, I was hoping you’d let me take a peek at it if I offered to help you.”Cookie and Cream from the Good Thyme Inn books. This art was made by Flaremarant. Cookie is a brown-chitin-skinned insect girl. She has compound red eyes, clear membranous wings, curly orange hair, and segmented limbs. Behind her is Cream, a fluffy white cat with four big blue eyes. Cream is equipped with a harness with some ingredients and a lantern with a white light. All around them, there are mushrooms of a variety of colors and shapes. Amanitas, morels, inkcaps, polypores, etc. It's a very colorful and awesome piece.

#AwesomeCharacters Grilled does not give a FUCK about "good" or "evil", only what he must do to give his loved ones the life they deserve. Aubergine believes he has no place to judge whether his actions are good or evil since he has a literal demon inside him. Two short snippets of their thoughts:
A wicked idea played through Grilled’s head. If Mamallot knew what he was up to, she would have been furious. Which was a load of mud and sludge because Grilled was only doing it for her sake. Still, it wasn’t the first time he’d done something evil so she could stay alive and remain owner of the inn.
It wasn’t the second or third time, either.Aubergine wondered if he would ever be a father. Oh, there was no question about him being a biological father. That had already been decided. But would he ever raise a child? Would he have to teach them right from wrong? What even was right and wrong? How could he, who bore the essence of a demon within, ever judge good and evil?

Sidonay from the Pentagonal Dominion books. Sidonay is a pale-skinned man with vampiric vibes. He has a fancy purple top with swirl patterns, black shoulder pads, a red cape, and a black and red hat that’s partially shadowing his face, with one red eye leering out ominously from that shadow. His hat has rubies dangling from the brim. He has silvery hair swooping down over one shoulder. He has a silver and ruby brooch, a silver ring, and red fingernails.Garlic drawn by Ame/Autumnchild
Garlic from the Good Thyme Inn books. He is a young man with white skin and short white/silver hair. He’s dressed in a white shirt with suspenders and bow tie, and blue pants. He is an alchemist and the background shows a cooking cauldron with green smoke and a shelf with potions. Garlic is holding a flask with a light green liquid in one hand and sniffing it with his forked snake-like tongue. He is a species of people who can detach their hands, as shown with his right hand, which has come off, connected by a thread of white smoke and fire. That hand is adding a substance to a mortar on a table.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky Just a beautiful day in the neighborhood...
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

Turnip scampered across the indoor bridge, gazing out the glass wall to observe the beautiful scenery outside. It was early spring in the year 292, and trees were growing green and the flowers blooming once more. Petals drifted down the Ale River and got caught in the nets Shallot had placed to keep the pipes clean. The front lawn was purple with creeping thyme, and the sight of it made Turnip’s heart leap for joy.
In the lobby, she hopped to her mother’s desk. The scent of cooking susi in the kitchen wafted in along with the gentle notes of Aubergine on the piano from the common room. Teenage Turnip drawn by Nush Deco. Turnip is a vulpine girl with her back to the viewer, turning so we can see her face and tails. Here, she has six tails. She has purple and white fur, purple on her head and tail tips, white on her torso and main body of her tails. She has long white hair, a hair puff on her head, a beet hair ornament, a green dress with an apron, and purple gloves. In the background, there are chains and pulls, pink flowers on vines, hanging plants, and shelves with books and an alchemical flask. An Aloutian-style clock with root veggie hands is on the wall.

#WIPSnips Shallot's first meeting with the two boys who would later be called Grilled and Garlic. Two runaway slave boys from a nation that enslaves anyone who's not female (by their standards, and yes, the Ophidians are transphobic as fuck)
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

“What are your names?” Shallot asked.
When the distant boy was unforthcoming, the one on Onion’s lap answered instead. “Our master called me Green and him White since those are the colors of our fire.”
Shallot took a deep breath, preparing to hear much about Ophidian cruelty the more questions she asked these boys. That was one topic the newspapers hadn’t devolved into lies about, as far as she could tell. Ophidia really was a nation of the most evil women in the dominion, where boys and men were enslaved for the crime of having a penis, and where every woman had made a pact with a Demon Lord to ensure her slaves remained docile. Shallot normally wouldn’t have put any stock in such salacious rumors, but guests over the years had confirmed them again and again. Former slaves, merchants, travelers, even the occasional lady who admitted that she owned slaves but was vacationing in Aloutia to see more of the world.

#WIPSnips Alllright, I've spent enough time away from this place. Time to return... and I want to do so with a WIPSnip! I've shared this one before, but alas, it's the only time I used 'tumble' in my wip🤣 Picture is of a tro-odon, for reference
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

He got on the baron’s pretty red tro-odon and kicked it to run like hell toward Aleton.
Grilled was still invisible thanks to the Shroud potion. If anyone spotted the reptilian bird on a mad dash through the woods, they would think it had lost its rider.
When the bomb went off, his whole world shook.
Grilled felt the wave in his very chest. A thud sent his heart and bones rattling. Even his brain felt like it had hit a wall. The tro-odon fell on its side and Grilled tumbled off, rolling over repeatedly and losing his hat amidst the chaos. His ears rang from the noise and he was momentarily stunned, but even in his moment of confusion, he had the wherewithal to grab his hat.
The tro-odon had scurried back to its feet in a flash and bolted south. When he came back to his senses, Grilled figured the bird was as good as gone now, though maybe some farmer or hunter would find it and put it to good use. Tro-odon in the Summershade Shroomery painted by Aowna
Painting of a red tro-odon with white spots. It's a reptilian dinosaur/bird creature with short wings, a long tail, and an upturned talon. It's in a forest full of mushrooms. The color palette is warm, with lots of reds, oranges, and a yellow glow

The "Pentagonal Dominion" is the collective name for ALL the planes that consist of my fantasy world. The Shallow Sea is part of it. Planes and dominions outside the PD are like... Earth and other peoples' fantasy worlds, lol. Deep Sea is all the oceans on all the PD's planes.
Map of the Pentagonal Dominion, a world of six planes arranged in a pentagon with one in the center. Going clockwise, the planes are the Quarantined Plane, the Makai Plane, Spiritua, the Aloutian Plane, the Cosmo Plane, and in the center is the Ophidian Plane. The Terran Dominion is also depicted here, connected to Aloutia.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky From its exterior, the inn appears to have five chimneys: two on one building, three on the other. Grilled wants to know which fireplaces they all connect to
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

The Good Thyme Inn was home to dozens of fireplaces and hearths, not counting the stoves and ovens in the kitchen. Most of them were in guest bedrooms and connected to each other in a communal chimney. From the outside, the guest building had two chimneys and the main building had three.
When he was younger, Grilled surmised that the three chimneys on the main building connected to:
1. The enormous hearth in the common room
2. The various stoves and ovens in the kitchen, possibly also the small fireplace in the innmaster’s room
3. The smaller fireplaces in the bedrooms the kids used.
But that younger Grilled had not been satisfied with surmising. So, he had taken his hands on a journey through each one, traveling through each pathway, searching for secret compartments such as the time he found Yamma’s diary.
His guesses were wrong.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky The reason Shallot didn't send her kids to be formally educated at the local school...
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

While waiting for Old Man Egg’s arrival, Shallot read the news. She sipped on an iced tea Parsnips had made for her. She loved cold drinks and was grateful to have such a caring husband who made ice cubes with his breath every morning for her on these hot summer days.
Relegated to the sideline news was a story concerning a pair of twin boys who’d gone missing in Dawndorrel. Mornese boys. Shallot had lost track of how many missing children that was now. The fourth pair of twins this month, and that wasn’t counting single-child abductions. Always kids on their way to or from school… Always a boy in the pair, too. Never Takyufon, either. She had to assume the delivery kid was safe.
She shook her head in disappointment at this wretched society. She would not let her kids go to school. Even though the schoolteacher in Aleton was a lovely lady who’d never hurt the kids, Shallot could not in good conscience let her kids walk alone to or from the school building, nor could she spare time away from the inn to escort them every day. She would have to teach them herself.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky Grilled and Garlic are runaway slaves who were just found and adopted by Shallot. Grilled is 8, Garlic 9 or 10 here. Turnip is about 4. This is from a scene where Turnip sees their current room for the first time...
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

“But where are their toys?” Turnip asked.
“I haven’t bought any yet,” Shallot explained. “I’ve had to buy their clothes and other essentials first, baby.”
Turnip nibbled on her lip. “Can they play with mine?”
“That’s very kind of you to share.” The only reason Shallot hadn’t requested it of Turnip yet was because her toys were simple and girly—cute stuffed animals, basic building blocks, a tiny house. Things Shallot did not think older boys would have any interest in.
“I’ll get you your own toys when I can,” she said to the boys. “But in the meantime, if you would let her play with you, I would appreciate that.”
Grilled and Garlic nodded. They had never had toys. An Ophidian mother would never bother giving her slave-sons anything that could distract them from their work.
