Kinolab curators will be the first to tell you that distinguishing between a zoom and a dolly can be tricky. But with this week’s post from @bowdoincollege.bsky.social they also tell you a bit about what makes a zoom distinctive.

The meaning of camera movement is highly contextual, as these examples from Kinolab curators @bowdoincollege.bsky.social show. Follow along as we work with @dbamman.bsky.social and fellow film scholars to develop computational approaches to study camera movement at scale this year.

Analytical AI methods developed by @dbamman.bsky.social help us identify camera distance in onscreen storytelling. But can these technologies account for scale, rooted in distinct story worlds and viewer perception? An interesting problem we’re confronting this summer @bowdoincollege.bsky.social.

What’s in, or what isn’t in, a close-up? Kinolab is working with computer scientist @dbamman.bsky.social (UC Berkeley, School of Information) and other collaborators this year to optimize analytical AI for film and media research, bridging the gap between distant and close viewing practices. 📉🎥👀

Heads up SCMSers! The annual DH and Videographic Criticism SIG meeting is this Friday, Dec 5 from 11-12 CST. Keep an eye on your inbox tomorrow for instructions about how to join the Zoom session. Come hang with us - we know when to use video instead of writing and we can sing (sort of)! #SCMS26

Camera movement has existed longer than we might think, with pans becoming common in the 1900s. Early filmmakers also simulated movement. This 1908 fairy tale THE GRATEFUL LITTLE MICE gives the illusion of a zoom by pulling the performers and prop book toward the camera. It's nearly seamless.

My #Yale colleague Harlan Krumholz explains why the cuts to indirect costs are a disaster for biomedical research in the United States. Want to do something about it? I'll list those who have to hear from us below. Share, recruit friends and family to help. 1/ www.statnews.com/2025/02/08/n....

The NIH’s drastic cut to indirect cost rates is a critical threat to U.S. research infrastructure
The drastic reduction in indirect costs is not a path to innovation or cost savings — it’s a threat to U.S.’s position as global leader in medical research.

Many of us have dear family and friends whose lives have been dramatically affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles. If you’re wondering how you can support the urgent recovery efforts underway there, please consider contributing to any or all of the following organizations.
