Sheriffs are elected, not appointed to office after meeting certain criteria. This law would have required them to:
- have at least five years of law enforcement experience
- no felony or gross misdemeanor convictions
- be 25+
- not have a history of actions that would get a peace officer's license revoked
- undergo background checks before election
- be replaced with someone chosen by county officials if removed from office
- for example, a sheriff can commit or have committed domestic violence, harassment and sexual abuse, they can interfere with criminal investigations, and they can endorse violence against protestors all without losing their job or their ability to be elected, while police officers cannot.
- the end of the article, as a very last sentence, mentions this law would interfere with the use of voluntary agents.
