Give an agent its own agency to lose, and feeling-like signatures follow. This poster is still early work – please share any feedback! feelingmachines.net/assc2026 /🧵

As an example emergent behavior, given a movable block and a den in the world, the agent runs in and seals itself off from the predator. Bunkering down is a behavior discovered by a planner that optimized only for self-maintenance.

Does knowing your own weakness always pay? Not necessarily. When chased by a lethal predator, the Feeler survives longer than a hand-crafted reflex policy. But when the predator is weak, it's a wash. Self-modeling is like insurance: it only pays off when the stakes are ruinous.

This isn't deep RL. We use a known-model MPC planner to isolate the variable of self-simulation. Though we also show the body model is learnable with a Dreamer-style RSSM, but this is only a planning study.

As the agent drifts from its setpoint, its intended actions can fail to execute. Depletion breeds clumsiness, which breeds more depletion, into a vulnerability spiral. To survive, the agent has to simulate its own vulnerability and the consequences of actions upon itself.

Homeostatic reinforcement learning was a breakthrough, showing how physiological drives (like hunger) can learn behavior from intrinsic rewards. We add a next step: tying the body's physical state to its very ability to act.

How do you get it to act with something like urgency? Relief? Self-preservation? And all of it intrinsically generated, without scripted behaviors? We introduce 🫀embodied vulnerability🫀.

Hola from #ASSC29 in Santiago, Chile! We are presenting early work here called "Skin in the Game": What kind of mechanism is needed for feeling-like behavior to appear in machines? 🧵...

It accelerates many laborious and error-prone clinical tasks, including data abstraction, patient history summarization, and clinical trial matching. (I make some brief remarks on this work in an interview at Meta: about.fb.com/news/2024/12...)

This last one is big, and has immediate real-world impact: we built an AI framework for processing cancer clinical text, centered on a custom embedding model trained from 8B tokens of real patient notes.

[2] "Empathic Coupling of Homeostatic States for Intrinsic Prosociality" by Yoshida and Man, at the IMOL workshop neurips.cc/virtual/2024... We implement a tiny version of empathy in multi-agent RL by coupling the internal drive states of homeostatic agents - and get prosocial behavior!

I'm so excited to be attending my first NeurIPS – after many years of gawking from the outside (FOMOing) at all the wonders taking place in this golden age of AI. Come say hello! We will be presenting three workshop papers:
