​Since 1995 Kingfishers Bridge Nature Reserve has transformed 250 acres of farmland into a variety of wetland habitats. It is now a vital sanctuary for numerous endangered species of the Cambridgeshire Fens. Open 365 days a year, dawn-dusk, at CB7 5XL

It's increasingly hard to keep our wetlands wet through the hot dry summers. The lake has shrunk well below its normal levels and the small ponds have dried up. So we are starting to dig a reservoir on the lime grassland to store surplus winter rainwater. The Konik ponies are very interested!

🏞️👨‍🌾 The Warden's team has completed their maintenance project on the Cam Washes SSSI — and doesn't it look fantastic? 🦆🐂This 18th-century construction is designed to hold the river Cam's winter floods, providing precious wetland habitat. 🤩🚜 Sabbatical volunteer Emily became an expert dumper driver!

We've just restocked our shop with more gorgeous greetings cards by local artist Lizzie Ault, Tales from the Fen 😍 Lizzie's designs feature Fenland wildlife, as well as Ely Cathedral, centrepiece of our northern horizon. Her winter scenes also make lovely Christmas cards. Open every day 8:30-4:30.

🚜 Our Wardens and wonderful volunteers have been hard at work this week, maintaining the waterways on the Cam Washes SSSI. 💦🦆🪷🐮This important wetland holds flood water from the river Cam & provides essential habitat for Fen wildlife. It also excellent grazing for Spinney Abbey's longhorn cattle

🏞️ As the temperatures drop a little this weekend, the Reserve is the perfect place to relax. ❤️‍🔥 We may look greener than most, but we're just as dry. To protect our precious Fenland habitats and wildlife, DO NOT light any naked flames on site. 🚒 Call 999 & our Reserve Manager if you spot fire.

Thank you for protecting our precious Fenland habitats and wildlife.Kingfishers Bridge Nature Reserve, looking north from the Mound on the morning of Friday 14 August. The mound itself is dry grass, but the willow trees in front of it are still green, and the Reserve beyond is covered in bright yellow fleabane flowers. 🗓️ We'll update you here on Cafe re-opening plans as soon as we can. 🚻 Meanwhile, the Reserve is open every day as normal, though the Visitor Centre toilet is closed during the refit. 🥪 You are welcome to enjoy the picnic benches around the Reserve. 🚗 Please pay for parking in cash or online.

😎 The Reserve looks breathtakingly beautiful this May Day. Lapwings are nesting, cuckoos calling, and our ponies are lazing in the sun. 🪜Behind the scenes, the refit of @thekingfishercafe.bsky.social is coming on well. Re-opening depends on contractors and deliveries of materials and equipment.
