Spent a while on this one. Doesn't happen with every player. I have no control over it.

"… the one wicket that had fallen was David Warner to Stuart Broad in the first over, so it wasn't even a real wicket." This is good stuff. (It's also Wood stuff. Good Wood stuff.)

Mark Wood’s international career was defined by his total commitment to probably the most important idea in cricket; a mad idea that even its firmest disciples eventually turn away from because the risk-reward ratio of pursuing it is so unfavourable.

I had a whole load of other things I wanted to talk about in this piece - one of which was the horse - and then I realised I'd sunk about 1,800 words on one delivery, at which point I realised I'd better narrow the scope if I was ever going to finish.

It’s a very simple idea. It’s the idea that there is a speed at which a cricket ball can be bowled above which the batter simply cannot hit it.

I guess there aren't many points between them and Notts won last year. One way or another, much less of a big deal for them.

Well some are more than that. I meant 'up from this year to at least' there really.

Lord's. I think it might be the same again next year as well at Headingley. That's the only one I've got my name down for.

"For fairly obvious reasons, King Cricket can't do anything about the obscene and unjustifiable levels of AI funding we're seeing at the minute." Not with that attitude you won't. Kyle Reese must be rolling in his upcoming cradle.

There seems to be a theme in the comments of this piece; that the site has an inbuilt defence against the machines scouring the web for useful information...

One might argue that's more a case of chronically overthinking things.

At least they're still throwing up these spiky cricketers, even if they're then funnelled into the sandpaper tubes of the system to have all their rarest and most useful attributes sanded off.

Alex Bowden @kingcricket.co.uk · 15/09/2026
Nothing's improved, really. They've still got a guy running the game (really badly) as his side hustle. But at least there's still *something* there.

When you've been picking 16-year-olds and burning them out before they're 23, there are no longer younger generations to turn to. And that's where I thought Pakistan had got to.

Alex Bowden @kingcricket.co.uk · 15/09/2026
The prospect that a player *could* do something indescribable to turn a match around keeps Tests interesting even when it doesn't actually happen. The first and second Test Pakistan teams were the first ones I can remember where it was impossible to even imagine someone doing that.

I think we all agree that rolling seven dice two-thirds of the way through the series isn't a sustainable way of going about things, but it soothes me that this can still happen.

James Anderson has taken 47 wickets at 17.57 this season. George Balderson has taken 52 wickets at 19.51. And Lancashire have won two games out of 12. In Division 2.

Those "Send money to Pakistan" adverts on the boundary boards come across like a charity fundraiser by this point in the tour.
