I want to be there, but I'm not quite, yet. It's the migraines, I think. I really, really hate the migraines.

I am still feeling around the edges of it, philosophically, but I think I'm working around the idea that equating unfortunate with bad is itself a cultural artifact that maybe doesn't benefit us. If language shapes thought as much as thought shapes language, what are we actually telling ourselves?

What? No. Someone needing medical intervention is *unfortunate.* Kill the Calvinist in your head.

So as a term it's about as useful now as the sunshine lists here. In the mid-90s they started listing public sector employees making over $100k but there's no mechanism to adjust for inflation. Now a bunch of teachers are on the list which definitely doesn't get weaponized to raise class sizes.

And it wasn't just about the money. We didn't use "slashdotting" to mean jacking up someone's hosting bill, after all.

Cats are territorial; it'll be fine. I think they just don't like working in front of their humans.

Now I'm having flashbacks to the year I walked my kid to school because she hadn't yet learned that walking in winter is way worse than riding the bus without Mommy. The road in front of the school was such a cluster no matter how many of us called the city, no matter how often.

When my mom was a kid, a family friend said something he'd been served was tasty, then winked at my mom and said "notice I didn't say what kind of taste." Tasty has been an insult ever since. Any outcry of "Who didn't (do the chore?!)" is met by a Spartacan chorus of "I didn't (do the chore)!"

My daughter has drawn some deeply questionable pictures of me over the years. Most of them are cute because she was so little. Some of them are so false they're insulting even accounting for her age and skill level, and those ones find themselves disappeared when she isn't looking.

I'm going to be so disappointed when my kid outgrows the Princess In Black books at bedtime. "EAT GOATS" monster voice is my favorite thing.

I don’t care where you started out on the political spectrum If your kid comes out as trans & you don’t become a rainbow-clad, parade-cheering ally & rock-solid supportive girl/boy/enby dad/mom? You were never a parent at all You were a doll collector furious they didn’t stay in their packaging.

Husband teaches high school. Occasionally grows a beard early in the school year to silently remind the rowdiest kids of his dominance.

And "being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion" is, like, exactly the Pope's job? Like, I can't criticize anyone who wants to fight God when the oven of Akhnai factored into my decision to convert, but that is not exactly the Pope's paradigm.

This right here is also why I instantly mistrust any man who leaps in to proclaim that rapists should be mutilated or killed. All that tells me is that you refuse to grapple with the ubiquity of these crimes and when your buddies are accused you'll fight like hell to defend them no matter what.

I remember driving when they executed McVeigh. The dj broke into the current song I think to play a horrid montage of frying noises and "stick a fork in him" type stuff and I was so grossed out. We as a society are just too sick to be responsible with this power.

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

As an American immigrant to Canada who has not yet managed to visit the UK, I have no direct knowledge. But there was discussion about the euphemistic potential of punting awhile back as a function of the differing ends.

I would have gotten them both wrong anyway, but I assumed we were being set up like with punting from the Oxford/Cambridge end.

It doesn't look like the squirrel attacked the dude so much as climbed up him while possessing claws; I think it's just trying desperately to stay out of reach of the dogs and holding on for dear life. It seems perfectly happy to bolt up that tree at the end, suggesting an intact survival instinct.

If I had a nickel for every time a squirrel ran up my legs and stared me down before leaping back (leaving only minor scratches, thankfully), I'd have 2 nickels, etc. Mostly I hate that my fear response leans to freeze, but sometimes it works!

I went from hating them to liking them when I got pregnant. Maybe it's one of those chimera things that got left behind when kid was born. That implies it's recessive though, I think (?), because husband still doesn't much care for raw tomatoes.

I see a bunch of people quibbling about "bigger mandate" because the margin was slim. My fellow Americans, if the president's mandate was a function of vote margins the country would maybe not be in such dire straits and I could visit my family again instead of insisting they come to me.

Well now I'm having an existential crisis. Do I have boring friends, or do they think I'm boring and have an interestingly named group chat excluding me? (My family is boring and/or lazy, I know that much.)

My gp told me about an app that's been actually useful (to a point). MyTherapy just plays a single polite chime. If ignored it plays another every 10 mins. The chime isn't obnoxious so I don't feel the need to rush to turn it off before taking the meds. (Instead I stall 2 hours on bsky, oops.)

Cleaning an entire summer's worth of pigeon droppings off the balcony (nothing's allowed to go over the edge), buy a car while presenting as a woman, listen politely to someone talk at length while their mouth is full.

I remember going with friends to see Depeche Mode in, what, 2014? About halfway thru the subway ride, I got mentally yanked back to high school and started worrying that I would stand out as being uncool. Then we got off the train and everyone was middle-aged and oh, right, we're ALL uncool now.
