If you are curious about the knowledge that old masters used to enhance their craft, I highly recommend reading this book. It’s a wonderful collision of science & art prompted by an artist’s deep curiosity, a curiosity that never dimmed. Thank you, David Hockney, for showing us how to look.

The inscription in the front makes this book a treasure. The book was a loving birthday gift from my grandfather, Francis Crick, to my grandmother, Odile Crick, who was a figurative artist. They would have seen many of the old masters Hockney examines, together at the National Gallery in London. 3/4

In his book Secret Knowledge, Hockney recounts the story of how he uncovered scientific & visual evidence, examining major works of art history & unveiled how artists such as Caravaggio,Velázquez, van Eyck, Holbein, Leonardo & Ingres used mirrors & lenses to help create their famous masterpieces 2/4
It is worth repeating here, I think, that optics don't make marks - they only produce an image, a look, a means of measurement. The artist is still responsible for the conception, and it requires great skill to overcome the technical problems and to be able to render that image in paint. However, the moment you realize that optics had a deep influence on painting, and were used by artists, you begin to look at paintings in a new way. You see striking similarities between artists you wouldn't normally associate; you notice big differences between painters who are traditionally grouped together; and you see distortions and discontinuities in pictures that are difficult to explain unless optics
had been used in some way.

We sleep to remember/ we sleep to forget… “The sleep to forget/sleep to remember model claims that the unique neurochemistry of REM sleep is designed both to consolidate emotional memories (sleep to remember) and to decrease the level of arousal associated with these memories (sleep to forget). “

The sleep to forget/sleep to remember model claims that the unique neurochemistry of REM sleep is designed both to consolidate emotional memories (sleep to remember) and to decrease the level of arousal associated with these memories (sleep to forget). As we've learned, there are high levels of activation in the amygdala uniquely in REM sleep, which supports the reactivation of emotional memories. However, the REM brain is also in a state of suppressed noradrenaline activity; noradrenaline is a neurotransmitter associated with arousal, so its inhibition during REM sleep means that we do not exhibit as much physiolagical
arousal as we do in waking life. This unique combination of high amy
dala activity combined with low noradrenaline means that the content of an emotional memory can be safely strengthened (and potentialy reexperienced in dreams) in a low-arousal state. Subsequent recall of the memory then benefits from lessened arousal, too, a learned diss-ciation. This prevents an unwanted buildup of anxiety associated wih emotional memories over time, but as we'll see later, this benefit is lot for those who experience nightmares.Nightmare Obscura by Michelle Carr
