School psych in transition (we do special education, NOT therapy!). Worked in k-12 schools in a variety of roles for ~13 years. master’s program for public admin with policy emphasis. Obsessed with sped policy. I’m not arguing, I’m doing DEMOCRACY. 💫🤗

This is going to drive me nuts. Is this real? I feel like it can’t possibly be. What is this scenario where a room full of exclusively men started off chill, gradually turned dangerous, and then the minute you scurry off they shrug and start talking about politics or whatever?

I think Mamdani’s success boils down to how much he visibly loves New York. Like imagine if we all had local politicians who loved our respective cities (or towns) THAT much. It would make politics so much more fun. And it makes Mamdani fucking BULLETPROOF.

It has taken me hours and hours and weeks and weeks, spreadsheet after spreadsheet and my giant 2 sided whiteboard, but I think I’m finally close to cracking the code on how to taper off my ssri in a way that doesn’t entirely upend my sleep schedule.

I interviewed for a position as a school psychologist, it was in early days of Covid so it was on zoom. I had my iced coffee in a wine-ish looking glass. So I nervously said “don’t worry it’s not alcohol” and they were like “no worries, it would be totes fine even if it was wine.” It was like 10 am.

I think that all public schools should have federal funding, not just title I schools or special education programs. Boom—a huge special education problem solved. More money = more gen ed resources = fewer unnecessary sped placements = more sped capacity for the kids who really need it. Done.

If you think that the definition of duck should include cats, then you have to have a definition that selects for both ducks and cats while also containing sufficient specificity to exclude other animals…. Which requires some dependence on their unique defining features.

You know, there’s this beautiful community at this fencing gym in my area. I spend a lot of time thinking about institutional cultures in educational environments—this has a beautiful culture. It’s a place where all the leaders the kids admire treat each other with respect.

ICE's new policy is unprecedented. People who have detained for months are suddenly disappearing from the locator system — even if they haven't been moved. And people newly arrested are not showing up at all, their location now hidden from view. This will severely interfere with legal access.

I realized the question of whether something is a strategy or a compromise is answered by asking whether you’ve lost sight of your goal, not the methods you use to achieve it. Throwing trans people under the bus to win is a compromise if your goal was ever to support them. Doing what you need to

I do think it is maybe worth saying additionally and explicitly that this is not about politeness. We live in a country run by open eugenicists who very literally talk about the worth of a person's life as a function of IQ. The r word is a slur for a group they would like to literally eradicate

Reading a super interesting study on how policy networks can be built on distrust. It’s got me thinking about how if we’re to have truly public services—where all people are included in the network providing the service—there is no “I’m not gonna talk to that person because I distrust them.”

Your knowledge of how words and language function is not based on statistical probabilities. The machines is—that’s why in my opinion it can never come up with anything truly creative. You can provide creative prompts that will get it to produce interesting output but then it’s your creation.

And it can mimic it pretty convincingly, but even the tiniest child will always be capable of leaps that you could not predict with math. The neural networks in your brain that produce semantic connections between words are constantly evolving and moving in your brain. They are alive.

I also got my bachelors in linguistics and can confirm that the capacity to produce language is far more complex than you could ever reproduce with predictive models. We have the capacity to produce things that are impossible to predict with math, even small children. AI can mimic that capacity

Here’s a great example. I was babysitting my two year-old niece, and she was doing a silly little dance on a carpet that had polkadots, and she spontaneously referred to it as “a polkadot dance.“ A two year-old has that kind of associative capacity to form new words and new phrases— AI simply cannot

On that note, you can get AI to help you come up with spontaneous and novel things, but that demands you providing it with novel input. And therefore its output is a product of YOUR creativity, not the AI.

Again I use Claude myself, so I’m not anti-AI. But it simply is not thinking and I do think it in flames alarmism and hyperbole to suggest that it does. This is why AI can never replicate human creativity.

What my niece did is something totally different. It wasn’t even a joke in the sense that it was funny, but she connected to things that are semantically totally unrelated, polkadots and dancing. That was a spontaneous novel connection that you couldn’t have predicted with math.
