It’s hard to summarize such a fulfilling weekend of connecting and music-making—rehearsals, performances, and even a recording (my first attempt at producing). This weekend has been galvanizing and so fulfilling. My heart is just fit to burst.

Being up this high (10,600ft), the view was spectacular, but what really stood out to me was the quiet—how long it has been since I’ve heard such a deep, sustained quiet like this. A beautiful morning.
View from a top Santia Crest near Albuquerque, NM. Granite peaks, dotted with trees, stretch down into rolling hills that end in a vast, flat plain that extends into the horizon. The sky is clear and boasts a spectacular blue, fading into white as it meets the horizon.

Mornings in Portland can be so breathtaking
Mt Hood sits far back in the center of the image, booking up from a dark skyline that starts with hills and breaks out into buildings and lights closer to camera. The majority of the image is dominated by a largely clear sky—a sharp orange near the horizon, fading into increasingly darker shades of blue. There are a few faint puffs of clouds, and one strong jetstreak in the upper right corner.

After a few test runs this weekend to remember how to tape bind music correctly (!!), these pieces are off today to the American String Teachers Association for the national conference this February! ✏️ After these are sent, it’s back to the writing desk again at last! 🎶
Three stacks of music lay on a desk, lit only with a harsh light to the right of the image. The three scores, from left to right, are Dirty Jeans for viola and piano, a work for lever harp, and a work for string orchestra and piano called “To Burst.”

This last movement was a real challenge because it’s so different from what I normally write, but it felt good to push myself & get inspired by other music when stuck. This movement features little outbursts from each player, and it was fun to imagine what each one was going on about while writing!

“The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them." -Brian Eno
"Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature.
CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It's the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them."

Back at the writing desk this week! Wrapping up movement 2 of 3 on an exciting commission, inspired by different types of conversations. While I’ve always loved writing for clarinet, I haven't had much opportunity to write for string quartet, so I've been really enjoying playing around with this!
Screenshot of the first page of music for clarinet and string quartet. The title reads “Conversations for clarinet and string quartet,” composer Kimberly R. Osberg.
