I came up with an analogue for the infamous "how many r's in a strawberry" gotcha: it's tokenized st|raw|berry, and LLMs see the tokens, not the letter representation. So, imagine I give you the following emojis 😇🥩🍓 (saint, uncooked meat, a small edible fruit) coding for a word? How many r's?

I was interested about the ability of contemporary LLMs to do arithmetic, so I asked Claude to construct itself a series of tests, and then check the answers with a calculator. It aced its own tests up to multiplying two 6-digit numbers and dividing 6-digit number by 3-digit number.
