I'm here for the birds and the smart people who like birds. And restoring native plant species. And good vibes. Illustration of northern pintail duck by @aledthompson.bsky.social

In love with tonight’s Strawberry moon!
Night sky with a large pinkish-orange moon rising above the horizon. There is a church steeple on the left and lights from cars on a highway.

Most of the warblers are gone, but the universe found a way to make me happy anyway: Yellow-billed cuckoo in northeast Indiana.

Came across the awesome scene along a rural road. There was about a dozen turkey vultures waiting their turn.

Dude I don’t even care that this photo is terrible. It’s a snowy owl at an airport and I got a picture of it.
A terrible picture of a snowy owl perched on a snow bank. There’s an airplane lot in the foreground and an orange snow fence behind the owl.

One of several Canada Jays feeding off a deer carcass … which I learned today is a favorite food of theirs. @ Saz-Zim Bog
A Canada Jay (bird) is centered in the screen. It is perched among a tangle of winter branches. The background is a very blue sky. The visible portion of the Jay is a black mask, white throat, and a grey floofy body.

Winter birding is so much fun. Quiet. No mosquitoes. Get all bundled up, toe warmers, hand warmers, layers, boots. Sure I only saw 10 species, but if the birds show out, I’ll toss on the purple parka that makes me look like Barney, and then I will too.
No birds are in this photo. Picture of a frozen pond with a gentle rise of forested, glacial esker hills across the shore.

Back in May, a park worker told me that a Carolina wren had made a nest in the 100-year old maintenance garage. Weeks later, chaos ensued in the garage when the chicks fledged. Working in a state park has so many lovely, small moments.
A box on a messy shelf is labeled ‘cleaning supplies for volunteers’ but it’s really just a bunch of rags. A bird has made a nest in the box.A bird has made a nest in the ‘cleaning supplies’ box. There’s a loose nest of leaves and other natural material. If you zoom in, you can see the frowny faces of three Carolina Wren babies.

Henry and his garland
A large orange and white cat, some have described as being shaped like a tank, is curled up on top of green and silver garland. Some gold and silver ornaments are in the foreground. A low winter sun backlights the glowing orange fur.

Please enjoy this pic of a bald eagle #birds
This is a picture of a bald eagle a fraction of a second after it lit off the branch it was on. All that’s left is a flash of white tail, blurry spread wings, gloomy early morning sky, and backlit branches

Solved my anxiety for .75 cents
A sign on the counter of a coffee establishment says, “Afraid of change? Leave it here (smiley face)” with a green arrow pointing to a tip jar. The jar has change and several dollar bills in it.

One doofus, one chaos agent
Two cats are in this photo. The grey and white cat in the foreground has green eyes and looks like Pennywise the horror clown. The orange cat in the background looks tentative, like maybe it’s not a good idea to approach the evil clown.

I condemn thee to watch over this wetland for all eternity, fighting all foes of destruction as if thee owned this land.
A red-winged blackbird sits atop dried seed heads. A late-winter marsh provides the backdrop with mostly dead vegetation. The blackbird has its beak open as if to scream a curse at the viewer: “I condemn thee to watch over this wetland for all eternity, fighting all foes of destruction as if thee owned this land.”

This was one of 14 monarchs I raised from an egg this year. All were successfully released. It’s such a quiet thing I do. But I thought maybe someone out there could use some beauty.
A fresh monarch butterfly, bright orange and black, on pastel pink swamp milkweed. The monarch is a male, based on the visible scent gland on the wing. It’s a sunny day from August.

The Fort Wayne pair, Moxie and Jamie, have come back for the 12th year and successfully laid eggs. I was really worried that the avian flu would get them.
A single peregrine falcon is nestled in a pile of rocks inside a 3-sided enclosure. It’s safe to assume she is incubating eggs. An Indiana DNR sign and an Indiana Michigan Power sign are tacked up on the backside of the enclosure. There’s rain droplets covering the camera’s lens.

Some days you’re the kestrel and some days you’re the vole
A small raptor bird rests on a telephone wire. A small, dead rodent hangs from its talons. The sky is dark grey and misty.

Red-shoulder hawks are my favorite. This one was so unbothered by me and focused on getting a meal that I got this shot thru my sunroof.
A hawk balances on a wire looking over its red shoulder. The sun is not in the photo but you can tell that it is setting by the golden light on the hawk’s feathers.

Posting this moment of zen.
A large orange and white cat sleeps on a chair on a bricked patio. The sun is low in the sky, giving the impression that it might be late in the day. The grass is green.

This is Frankie (aka Pennywise). This is Frankie's box. It has crinkle paper in it. She does not want you to put in softer material. Just the crinkle paper, if you please.
A tragic-looking cat is in a box. She looks like she would mess you up if you tried to remove her from the box.

Snow buntings. Oh wait, is it supposed to be a good pic?
A snowy field with a dozen snow bunting. But it's hard to see them unless you zoom all the way in.

Adopted a senior lady this week. She's been through some stuff for sure. She's pretty much been sleeping and purring for 5 days straight. Kind of crazy looking, like a cobbled-together cat. Meet Frankie, y'all.

Throwback to April 2024 ... Nearing the end of a birding hike at Goose Pond. You can't tell, but in a few mins, I'm about to find 2 Black-necked Stilts.
Wide angle of a wetland. Most of the photo is an impressive, dramatic storm rolling in.

From April: A Northern Parula performing air-ballet. Reliably always hear them in spring but impossible to actually find.
A small warbler bird in mid-flight with one wing stretched out like a cape opening and the other wing closed across its body. The characteristic deep yellow throat, obvious. A deep blue April sky and spring budding tree in the background.

Early Sept I had 18 5th-instar Monarch cats in my Swamp Milkweed. I caught a couple of No. Cardinals feasting themselves (I hope they got tummy aches) so I brought in the remaining cats to safety. Here they are on release day, beautiful and ready for the journey south.
Two Monarch butterflies rest in a shrub while their wings fully expand and dry. Their wings are vibrant orange rimmed in dramatic black.

When you're an office clerk at a state park, most days are copy/phones/registrations. But some days people hand you an owl, too
A wet, kind of peeved-looking Great Horned Owl is wrapped in the jacket of a kind Samaritan who found the owl disabled near a state park. All you see of the owl is its head and its displeasure.

Hey all. Happy to be here. Birds and native plants are my thing, but not what I do for a living. Maybe some day.
Cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis, a vibrant red wildflower. Photo taken at dusk when the low sunlight ignites the flowers flame-red.
