Altadena has a significant Black middle class population with deep historical roots. Altadena Meadows was exempt from redlining policies that prevented African Americans from purchasing property in much of CA. I know people who have been directly impacted. They lost everything.

Norovirus: You Don't Want It.

Hello, everyone. I'm #SciDoc, one of the #SciBabe admins. I'm also a Board-Certified Pediatrician and I used to be a virologist. I agree with everything that #SciBabe just said and I would like to add a few things:

1) While coronavirus particles are like fragile soap bubbles, norovirus particles are like ball bearings. The only things that will reliably destroy them are bleach (hypochlorite or peroxide), hot water above 60-70°C, and incineration. (So you have to burn your house down.)

The quaternary ammonium compounds found in products like "LYSOL" do not reliably destroy norovirus particles. As #SciBabe said, hand sanitizer is useless and can actually increase transmission rates because they cause skin irritation and that leads to rough skin that gives the particles more places to hide (hand sanitizer is great against enveloped respiratory viruses like flu, RSV, and coronaviruses).

Soap and water do not destroy the virus, BUT they can wash it off your hands, so wash your hands well for at least 20 seconds and make sure to get under your fingernails.

2) If you do get norovirus, a true oral rehydration solution like "PEDIALYTE" is your friend. Sports/snack beverages are less ideal. Small sips will stay down and get absorbed. Big gulps are likely to come back up.

PLEASE AVOID ANYTHING WITH RED DYE because it can turn the vomitus and diarrhea red, which can make you think it's blood and lead to unnecessary trips to the emergency room. Let's not make this any harder than it has to be; pick a different color.

3) When you have gastroenteritis, your stomach empties very rapidly and the acid from your stomach does not get neutralized. The diarrhea that comes out will be acidic and will cause a lot of irritation at your backside. Vaseline or even baby diaper ointment can help with this.

4) If you haven't peed in 8-12 hours or you're dizzy/faint when you stand up, you need prompt medical attention.

5) Symptoms last 1-7 days. You may have some residual GI "funniness" for a few weeks after while your intestines heal. Most people are no longer contagious 7-14 days after symptoms stop, but some people can shed virus for much longer, especially if they are immunocompromised.

6) Your doctor can prescribe ondansetron ("ZOFRAN"), an anti-nausea med. We do NOT recommend antidiarrheal medications like loperamide ("IMMODIUM") because you want to get the diarrhea out. Retaining it could lead to a life-threatening and life-altering situation called toxic megacolon, which is every bit as unpleasant as it sounds.

Oh, and here's a not-so-fun fact: in one milliliter of norovirus diarrhea, there can be a TRILLION copies of the virus. It takes a mere twenty copies to get you sick. So that's what we're up against: a very sturdy virus that can last for weeks on surfaces where a tiny innoculum can get you sick.

I finished watching Squid Game Season 2, and I have to say, it’s better than the first. Season 2 hits harder, especially in how it mirrors our choices under capitalism.
