Next time you plan a lesson, ask: "What question will give my students a reason to read?" Stop the compliance trap. Start the thinking. Read more in "Short Reads Between Worlds #7": substack.com/@kharyfletch... (3/3)

When Reading Has No Purpose

The fix? Move from "assigning" to "questioning." Hattie’s research shows that self-questioning has a high-impact effect size (0.64). When students own the questions, they own the meaning-making. (2/3)

Reading is not a checklist. 🚩 Too often, we treat comprehension strategies (main idea, inference, etc.) as isolated tasks. Students fill the boxes, but the meaning doesn't "stick." When reading becomes a routine, it becomes compliance. 🧵 (1/3)

This still holds up. The Hook gets attention. The Why builds purpose. The Window opens meaning. If students don’t have a reason to read, everything else becomes compliance. Where do you see the biggest gap right now in classrooms—hook, why, or window?

When reading has no purpose it becomes compliance. Students complete tasks but miss meaning. The shift is not more strategies it is better questions. Yes! It’s the easiest thing to shortcut because it takes intentional slowing down. But that reflection piece is what turns practice into growth. Appreciate you reading! Would love your take once you’ve had a chance.

This isn’t about adding a new strategy—it’s about clarifying the purpose behind the ones we already use.
