I haven't actively used FA for years, that's just not how I engage with the fandom these days. But it's a precious resource and a pillar of our fandom, so I subscribed to FA+.

"where are you"

Khaki @khaki.dog · 02/10/2026

That's a GREAT example

An "icon" can be understood immediately: it directly resembles what it signifies. An "index" can be reasoned from commonly shared context. Why is there a sign with a knife and fork by the roadside? Ah yes! But a "symbol" is totally arbitrary and must be learned, e.g. "Maybe It will happen today"

I took a short course on semiotics in uni that comes in handy every few years. It studies "meaning" from the perspective of different relationships people and things can have with it. Relevant here is its classification of "signifiers" things that can encode meaning:

I think I've got a different take here. I disagree that the purpose of art is to make you feel something. It will, ideally, make you feel something, but that because feeling is the natural human reaction to art's actual purpose: to mean something.

Woo! Tons of great furry books — paperbacks, hardcovers, ebooks and audiobooks — sharply discounted. Yes I *do* need a larger to-read stack...

Well yes, but there's no reason I can't do it again. Title: Game of Life Genre: uh... magical realism I guess? Word Count: 94303 Funniest Moment: Game infiltrates a renaissance masquerade, but gets distracted by how damn good the costume looks on him. 🔗: doppelfoxxpublishing.com/products/gam...

That moment in your annual weekend getaway with your oldest pals when someone uses a pull in the bacchanal to catch up on Sumo-wrestling on his laptop and 30 minutes later everyone gets SUPER into Sumo and demands to see the rest of the championship I love my friends 💜

A smiling man takes a selfie in a spacious room where other men sit in comfortable chairs watching a TV showing a Sumo wrestling match

Absolute gem of a story. Now available in audiobook form!

Bananas right? It was easier to put Jones though impromptu training to perform a sophisticated dance routine than to find a trained dancer who can endure a typical Doug Jones creature workday

020

Khaki @khaki.dog · 27/09/2026

...for Doug Jones to perform the routine himself

120

Khaki @khaki.dog · 27/09/2026

Ohhhh yeah absolutely amazing. A professional dancer was brought in for this scene and fitted for the suit and then had to be hospitalized with heatstroke after two hours of filming Instead of finding a replacement, filming was halted for the six weeks of full time dance lessons
