Maybe a shot in the dark but I once read a really good paper that showed that large autoregressive effects can cause bias in cross-lagged estimates. Anyone know who wrote this, or the title of the paper? Google scholar isn't finding it.

.. you could time embed the data before reading it in. Then gimme will further time embed, making a duplicate lag-1 but also the lag-2 you are after. You'd have to do some creative coding with the "exogenous" argument to prevent nonsense paths. A bit much to explain here! Lmk if I can help.
