I got this in plum this year to make myself feel better about having to dress like a grownup. No exterior pocket, alas, and not convertible, but I got it with a fuschia canvas organizer insert, and the whole thing makes me happy every day.

NEW: I came across a bookseller who was afraid that a mysterious company trying to buy some of his rarest books was going to use them to train AI models. I went down the rabbithole with him, and was confused and altogether existentially weirded out by what I found www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Is there any sign the situation has changed? Or is it time for me to suck it up and find a new VPN? Huge thanks to any of you who have been paying closer attention than I have.

Friends, I need a Proton update. I migrated my email away after their CEO endorsed whatshisface, though I had multiple years of pre-paid service. I have still taken advantage of their VPN, though, and my account is nearing expiration. +

I so wish Harris/Walz hadn't allowed themselves to get pushed off of "They're so weird." Not quite as on point but it was building good energy.

This essay reflects on hope, perspective, and why academics must resist despair in a post-truth age – not because it is all good, but because this is now looking like the very bad place and critical knowledge is desperately needed if we are to survive at all. folukeafrica.com/academics-as...

What an *amazing coincidence* that the moves to undermine public higher education by shifting its costs from the government to students and families begins in earnest in the 1970s.

There is a technology which is so expensive to operate that *just by existing*, it has made things like RAM and hard drives unaffordable to me and the humans I know, because the expensive technology's operational demands are so high they had to buy RAM and hard drives *until there weren't anymore RAM or hard drives*. *A technology with this property is not, and was never going to be, a "democratizing" technology*.
