We have a new episode coming out tomorrow, but as a bridge from the past to the future here's a few things we found interesting about the process of creating Akira's soundscape.

Credit where credit's due to Megazone 23 Part III, this is one of the more sinister opening lines and images (unintentionally?) for a work of eighties cyberpunk.
An oddly Playskool-coded workstation interface from Megazone 23 Part III, with a display that reads "Good luck! And you'll be save in cyberspace!!"

I stumbled into rewatching Koyaanisqaatsi again just after Akira, & it’s fascinating how it at times share's similar environmental imagery. I wonder if there was a pervasive preoccupation with how we change the world through our technology, and the resultant cityscapes going on in the 80’s.

You know what's just like Akira? A 86 minute long abstract non-narrative documentary from 1982. Hey wait come back! Koyaanisqatsi is great i promise! it's got cool light trails too!

They are interesting artifacts in their own way. Especially when they run into problems replicating the movies. For example take this establishing shot of Tokyo in Akira where the different zoom levels of the cells they are stitching together to make one image is very apparent.

It's hard to find much information about the Kodansha Anime Comics apart from the odd note on a wiki or a smattering of auction listings, but they seem to have been made for a fair few works. Including some you wouldn't expect.

Part of the work of editing any podcast is there's always a moment when someone says something that just sounds a little off, and you find yourself thinking: "Did someone really publish a comic of Akira made entirely from sliced up shots from the movie?" and yes they did indeed.

I'm rewatching Crest of the Stars with friends and we just saw our heroes' escape hindered by the ruler of the outpost where they stop for fuel. His plan of course is to exploit the chaos to form a breakaway state of himself, his dad locked in a closet, and fifty maids. Me? I'm just thinking of him:
