Let's talk about the bristlemouths, 13 species of bioluminescent deep-dwelling ocean fish in genus Cyclothone. There are a lot of them. Like, a lot. Specifically, our best guess is there are a million billion (1E15) bristlemouths on Earth. Making them the most populous vertebrate on the planet.
A xenomorph looking fish with dark slightly sparkly skin and an oversized lower jaw packed with sharp, needle-like teeth.

this is huge (if implemented). as i understand it, this is a protocol extending atproto that lets you declare member-only spaces (e.g. forums, groups, or something more exotic) holding data that different apps can read and write. so — like atproto, but with access control
{
  "lexicon": 1,
  "id": "com.atmoboards.forum",
  "defs": {
    "main": {
      "type": "space",
      "description": "A discussion forum",
      "key": "any",
      "name": "AtmoBoards Forum",
      "name:lang": { "es": "Foro AtmoBoards", "ja": "AtmoBoards 掲示板" },
      "collections": ["com.atmoboards.thread", "com.atmoboards.reply"]
    }
  }
}

This looks great. Is it something you plan to release?

I recently switched fully to Firefox. The fact that Jake works on it helped motivate me.

Curious why the first two don't feel app specific to you? They feel clearly tied to the respective services to me (e.g. I know that Pckt is for blogging and Tangled is is for code, just as well as I know Substack is for newsletters).

Aha - thanks for the link 😀 I'll catch up on the conversation there.

Some things user might find confusing: Bob finds cool Atmosphere blogging app (he's never heard of Bluesky / atproto). He signs up and his pds is then tied to that domain. Bob finds new Atmosphere app, feels weird signing in with 'blogging' app. Blogging app shuts down, Bob has to migrate PDS etc.

> end users don’t seem to care about who hosts their data I wonder if this might change? Trusting and paying for one dedicated service that hosts all my Atmosphere data, independent of any 'app', sounds quite compelling. Then signing up for new things always sends me 'home' to authorize.

Very intereseting stuff! The links to Tranquil on the blog post are broken. It looks like it's moved to tangled.org/tranquil.far... - is that what you're currently using? Also what are you using for blob storage?

If you do, there's no need to lose any followers or content. An important feature of atproto is you can change hosting without losing anything. This is prob the best service to help with migrating: pdsmoover.com

A major benefit of atproto is that you can move hosting without creating a new account and losing all your old followers / content etc. Curious why you chose to start afresh?

A couple of years ago @michaelaufreiter.com helped me realise a dream to launch @postowl.com. We used ProseMirror for live in-place rich text editing. Now he's gone to another level by implementing his own live rich text editor in Svelte - lean and fast. I can't wait to get this into an app!

Thanks for the replies. All makes sense. Hopefully Bluesky can help evolve their permissions dialogs so that people not familiar with AT Proto, PDSs etc feel safe authorising ATmosphere services.
010
Tom Atkins @keybits.net · 04/02/2026
Probably the wrong place to ask, but the permissions dialog makes it looks like npmx.dev will be able to publish to my Bluesky account... I don't think it can, but I can imagine others being confused. Is there a discussion / work being done to make this clearer?
Screenshot of npmx.dev auth dialog.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I bought it a couple of days ago and absolutely love it. Combined with a midi controller I'm having so much fun. The blog post was super inspiring. And only now do I discover music apps aren't your full time job - incredible and thank you!

Interesting! Having worked at GitLab where everything that could be was public, this piques my interest. One benefit of information being public was the ability to search and find without needing to ask. What size team is using this approach? Are the Pulse updates required? Who creates them?

I'm still unsure if I actually like this style of social media. Improving the signal to noise ratio is tough given the variety of content individual accounts post. I spend more time on subject specific forums. But I'm loving how the 'ATmosphere' is developing so will hang around here for now :-)
