Rather than allowing humanists to contribute to Radio 4's Thought for the Day, the BBC's current format requires all speakers to frame political and current affairs commentary through a religious or scriptural lens. Yet half of the UK is non-religious so why not let us speak?

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue

This cake is magnificent in its damp blackness. I can't say that you can absolutely taste the stout in it, but there is certainly a resonant, ferrous tang which I happen to love. The best way of descr...

Really struck today by how many of the people most responsible for the Brexit shitshow were actively rewarded for their stupidity/dishonesty. Knighthoods, Damehoods, peerages, newspaper columns, seats in the House of Commons… It’s a mark of how deep the rot has gone into the fabric of our society.

Auschwitz Memorial @auschwitzmemorial.bsky.social · 27/01/2025
Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.
A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.

The National Trust, pro-lunch since 1895. 📸Annapurna Mellor and Rob Stothard
Five firefighters sit and lie on the grass at Clandon Park, surrey, taking their lunch break. The expansive park is visible in the background, while the firefighters are in the foreground in their overalls. One is sitting on a trolley and there is food and drink scattered on the floor between them. A family is sitting to eat lunch. A woman, and young girl are sitting on once side while a man and another young girl are visible on the other side. All are wearing Christmas jumpers or headgear. The table is crowded with plates and food. Father Christmas is visible but out of focus in the background. A family sits around a table in a pub. There is a man, two women and a baby. All have coats on. The adults all have plates of food in front of them. The stone wall of the pub and a bookshelf are visible in the background. A staff member wearing a blue National Trust apron is serving plates of food. The staff member is a young man with big biceps in a black polo shirt. He is smiling at the camera.

Today’s poem is called ‘How to Avoid Mixing Your Metaphors’.
How to Avoid Mixing Your Metaphors

It’s not rocket surgery.
First, get all your ducks on the same page.
After all, you can’t make an omelette
without breaking stride.

Be sure to watch what you write
with a fine-tuned comb.
Check and re-check until the cows turn blue.
It’s as easy as falling off a piece of cake.

Don’t worry about opening up
a whole hill of beans:
you can always burn that bridge when you come to it,
if you follow where I’m coming from.

Concentrate! Keep your door closed
and your enemies closer.
Finally, don’t take the moral high horse:
if the metaphor fits, walk a mile in it.

So much misinformation around today on who will be affected by changes to inheritance tax - and lobbyists pretending the data isn't clear to obfuscate. We have detailed data on estates so the truth is in fact very clear if you care to look 🧵
