A "Navigator" responded to my detailed email requesting a phone call. Yeah, okay. It'll be quick, though. My email was clear. Send an Assessor (Nurse) who adheres to the laws, not one who claims to have powers they don't.

Americans better be having regrets. Choices were made that allowed this to become reality. We were warned for years. To claim ignorance rings hollow. Both sides are to blame for different reasons, and I'm not seeing evidence either side has learned much.

Yes, absolutely. But I would question what supports are in place to ensure a full recovery and prosperity. If I had control over that, too, then I'd feel even better about it. In truth, it's not this simple. NIMBYism is real, and resources are severely lacking. cc @markcherrington.bsky.social

Right, yes, on Patreon. I guess I never thought of it like a newsletter. Maybe daily is too often? I have switched to weekly and a paid monthly for mine. I'm still creating the blog posts and YouTube Shorts, but I don't want people to become numb to them.

I think you're putting in too much effort for too little return. For example, I appreciate your short videos, but they're not getting traction. Maybe do a weekly or monthly (paid?) newsletter to remind people of what you're doing?

I'm relieved to hear some have helped you out. I'm frustrated that it took you pouring your heart out like that in desperation for it to happen. I really wish you would put some of your work behind a paywall, or narrow your focus. I had to, and it's slowly working.

IMHO it's a rather stunning achievement that Social Media companies convinced nearly every biz in the world to permanently put their logo on their branding, vehicle wraps, etc, for free marketing in the attempt to "connect" with customers, which was honestly never the point.

Second MAID assessment done today. She contradicted some of the "basics" of eligibility that the program has confirmed to me multiple times. She denied me based on how she interprets the law and her role as an Assessor, which she claims she can do. I'll iron out the details with their office.

Yep. Prestige podcasting is dying for the same reason as the rest of the media: Pontificating is cheap and reporting is expensive.
It turned out that companies could make way more money if they went straight to the profitable projects—the ones that favored big names and “always on” publishing schedules, and which required (and allowed for) less editing, less format experimentation, and less contemplation. This is why the word “podcast” increasingly means “dudes talking at each other for five hours on camera.” Those hours are then cut down to one minute-ish clips to share on social media in the increasingly futile hope that one will go viral. Step 3, as always, is: ??? Step 4, the most important one, remains: Profit. The result of this enshittification is a fundamentally different medium, and one that produces work very different than the kind I got into this business to make. The consensus picks among people in the industry for the best and most influential podcasts of all time are the sort of work that the industry mostly does not produce anymore—higher-touch narrative projects that are more novel than shitpost, and more art than commerce.

Our Handyman has expressed interest in doing that work full-time after 20+ years in automotive parts at a dealership. We were discussing a new website. Most people get pointed toward WordPress. For the landing page he's basically looking for, I suggested Wix or Squarespace.

Online age verification is not like "showing ID to buy alcohol" because a) the liquor store doesn't get to scan your ID and store a digital copy of it forever in a database that will inevitably get hacked b) you don't have to show ID to go to the library because they have cocktail recipe books

Nova Scotia's iconic Blue Nose is refusing to travel to Trumpland. This is a huge decision given the role they play in the international schooner festivals. But they will not cross the border. The Blue Nose is your dime. If they can hold the line against fascism. So can you. Keep the boycott strong.

Supporting libraries is worth it whenever possible, but I have never forgiven the frustration in the 2000s of renting DVDs that are seriously scratched up and often skipping or refusing to play at random. Are libraries keeping on top of that and checking?

I love it when people on Substack push the idea of “give people what they want to get subscribers” as click bait, then bury their supposed gospel of advice below “don’t do this” ramblings, near the end of a 3,000 word think piece.

In recent years, some of those who voted for the C*ns claimed they were “tricked” or “didn’t fully understand” what or who they were voting for. That can no longer be believed. This is an overwhelmingly majority for a man Canadians know VERY well. This is deliberate choice.
