"You're better off letting me choose your next boyfriend."

Without looking up from his sketchbook, the young man speaks for basically everyone in Mingi's life. Anyone who has known Mingi since he was barely tall enough to reach the kitchen counter.

"You know," he drawls as he claims the seat across from his nephew, "you probably shouldn't talk to your dad like that."

Sumin slowly lifts his head, flashing Mingi a pitying stare over the rims of his glasses.

In Sumin's defense, Mingi isn't his biological father. Only the piss-poor stand-in for Sumin's mother, who had made a much better parent before a roadway accident took her away from them.

With a sigh, Mingi slides his phone across the table toward him and—with a breezy flick of his wrist—unlocks the screen. A message from his coworker, Yeosang, blinks back at him from the screen.

Thank God Mingi knew someone in the area before moving there. And he's even luckier that his friend speaks to him after his last… 'romantic incident.' The very same incident that forced him and Sumin to uproot their lives in Seattle and move clear across the country.

"We should probably leave soon," Mingi says, jerking his chin toward his distracted nephew. "So I have enough time to meet your new teacher before heading to work."

"You don't have to do that. You know that, right?"

"Introduce myself to your new teacher?" Mingi huffs. "I've done the same with all your teachers. It was never a problem before."

"Yeah, but I'm in high school now." Sumin tucks his pencil into the spiral of his sketchbook and winces. "It's embarrassing."

"You're a teenager. Everything is embarrassing to you."

"Not everything."

Regardless of his protests, Sumin climbs into Mingi's old Toyota sedan after inhaling his breakfast, fully dressed and ready for his first day. One of several 'first days' since Mingi took him in.

As they pull into the school parking lot, Mingi glances at Sumin out of the corner of his eye.

"I really mean it this time," Mingi says, hardening his tone. Imploring Sumin. "I promise."

Sumin holds his gaze for a solid minute before looking away. He gives a jerky nod, and Mingi relents, unlocking the car door.

Once inside the building, the principal kindly points them in the right direction, and they easily find Sumin's first-period classroom. The school is half the size of Sumin's middle school in Seattle. Clean and cozy.

The classroom is no different. Inside, several students have already arrived for the day, desks pushed together as they gossip about god-knows-what. Mingi lifts his hand to knock but freezes in place when the door opens.

On the other side stands a man who quite literally takes Mingi's breath away.

"Good morning," the man greets, and, god, his smile. "I'm Mr. Jeong. Sorry, I…" He cocks his head to the side. "You two lost?"

Mingi's mouth falls open, but no sound comes out. This man—Sumin's new teacher—is a couple of centimeters taller than Mingi. Light brown hair tickles the rims of his glasses, bangs hanging cutely over his forehead, and when he folds his arms over his chest, Mingi can't tear his gaze away from his bare forearms.

"…No," Sumin cuts in. Mingi can practically feel his judgmental stare. "I'm a new student, and… I have your first-period class."

Mr. Jeong's lips curve into what Mingi can only describe as a smirk. Mingi swallows.

"Oh, I see." Mr. Jeong drags his attention away from Mingi, finally granting him the ability to breathe again. "I'm flattered that you would introduce yourself to your son's new teacher, Mr…?"

"Song," Mingi blurts. Far too loud.

Sumin's shithead classmates glance in their direction, and Mingi's face suddenly feels hot.

"Song, huh?" Mr. Jeong says, his tone light. "Well, Mr. Song, you can call me Yunho. It only feels right to be on a first-name basis with my students' parents."

Conveniently, Mingi's brain has gone offline again.

Mingi can only watch in stupefied silence as the prettiest man he's seen in years—outside of Yeosang, of course—types his phone number into his phone. Mingi's phone. As in he could fucking text Yunho now if he wanted.

Satisfied, Yunho hands the phone back with a flourish. Eyes fixed on Mingi the entire time.

"There you go, Mingi," he says, voice low. Mingi's name drips off his tongue like honey. "In case you need a new friend."

'Friend,' Mingi thinks dumbly. He would much prefer something more than friendship.

"Have a good day," Mingi finally blabs, nudging Sumin towards the classroom. "Pay attention in class."

Sumin shoots him a wink over his shoulder. As if his ass won't be grounded for the rest of his life.

Once his student is out of earshot, Yunho turns back to Mingi, long fingers curled over the edge of the door. His smile softens. "It was nice to meet you, Mingi. Really. I promise to take good care of your son, and… I'm serious about my offer. It's hard to make friends in a new place."

The door shuts in Mingi's face before he can get another word in edgewise. Not that he could've responded intelligently in the moment.

As it is, it takes him a solid five minutes to peel his feet off the floor.

And another ten minutes to leave the parking lot.

"This time really will be different, Sumin," Mingi announces to the empty car.

didn’t have time to post on Jimin day but I did take him and the og run club on a 20 mile birthday run in Tacoma, wa complete with seals and beautiful scenery :D then he tried to escape at the svt concert but he he made it home after all. He clearly had a very nice birthday weekend
