In a city sometimes colder than Mars. I once wrote stories at Cliffhanger Magazine, Water Dragon Press, Bronze Knuckles Magazine and Swords & Sorcery and the anthology Necro Sapiens. Let's say I am a former author for now.

There's a lot of copium going on from some of the more glassy-eyed zealot proponents of this platform, but has it occurred to this quality-over-quantity crowd that most people DON'T want to relive Twitter circa 2018-or-whatever-year people remember as it being good?

A year ago I wrote the sword & sorcery story 'Scream to Heaven' which readers described as "Robert E. Howard's Pontypool." It was written to process what living through convoy protesters using actual train horns to terrorize our neighbourhood night after night, before slinking away, unpunished.

I discovered Grimjack during a very dark time in my life, Ostrander's writing, Tim Truman's visuals and John Gaunt's mixture of cynicism and melancholy got me through the worst parts of that period' To this day I consider getting a tattoo of Grimjack's fanged star symbol as a mark of gratitude.

From the pages of @newedgeswordmag.bsky.social! It’s the Fafhrd cocktail recipe by @kevinbeckett.bsky.social! It’s extremely good! Bonded Old Grand-Dad works really well here with the cinnamon and ginger and cranberry. (I sadly did not have the crème de violette to make the Gray Mouser)
A reddish colored cocktail in a tall glass with a cinnamon sugar rim and garnished with two cranberries.

One of the joys of getting published in a horror anthology is you get to share the table of contents with story titles like this (It's a good story!)

The second and final part of my historical swashbuckler "Death from the Steppe!" is now out! It involves a dread secret hidden in an abandoned Spanish fort and how it entangles our hero with Cossack marauders sent over from the Russian empire. cliffhangermagazine.com/2025/11/21/d...

Part 1 of my Zorro homage is now available to read from @cliffhangermag.bsky.social, written for an anthology that fell through, and featuring an off-brand version of the character from a now-public-domain radio show. Glad it has finally found a home. cliffhangermagazine.com/2025/11/07/d...

Technically Hindu mythology, but if a Soviet precursor to Gennady Tartakovsky portraying Kali riding a lion while bearing axe and spear to take on a giant bull-headed demon while a modern badass classical music cue plays isn't sword & sorcery, then I don't know what is. youtu.be/NNFpGZSJYPE?...

Seriously, check out Terence Stamp in Federico Fellini's VERY loose adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "Toby Dammit/Never Bet the Devil Your Head" for SPIRITS OF THE DEAD. LSD, Cocaine, existential despair and Mario Bava concentrated into an absolute nightmarish segment.

RIP Terence Stamp. General Zod, the Limey, Willie Garvin in MODESTY BLAISE, and my personal favourite: burnout actor Toby Dammit going insane in Federico Fellini's very VERY loose adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "Never Bet The Devil Your Head" in SPIRITS OF THE DEAD.

Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz or How to Suppress Women’a Writing – The Fantasy Edition
I'm over at Galactic Journey again - for the second time this month and a third article is coming later this month, which must be a new record for me - to talk about Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz, a novel which was incredibly influential and yet isn't remembered nearly as well as it should be. For the actual review, head over to Galactic Journey. If you want to know why this novel was so influential - which I obviously couldn't discuss from the 1970 POV of Galactic Journey…

Saw a sub call for a retro 50s B-Movie anthology. I think it will be very hard to top Norman Partridge's Anthology IT CAME FROM THE DRIVE-IN. Just the story titles alone, you can't beat for hitting that trash vibe perfectly.

Another Sword & Sorcery thread: The interesting legacy of Robert Jordan's Conan novels is that, despite not being well-regarded by Conan fans and Wheel of Time fans being lukewarm at best, it was due to his WOT fame that Rebellion apparently bought the Conan IP on a whim in the early 2000s. (1/?)

So the Sword & Sorcery revival in short fiction as looked at over the course of ten years: A Thread. The baseline in 2015 was approximately 50 slots, as Swords & Sorcery did three slots a month, and Heroic Fantasy Quarterly did 3-4 slots per issue (I know they had the occasional reprint).

Write story in 2020. Have a publisher take three years before anthology comes out. Have it now out of print and anthology delisted in just two years after as publisher closes down. It wouldn't sting except for the delay and it's the second story that ever saw print, with my first in 2017.

Absolutely jaw-dropping in not just how far it goes in brutality and violence in a Comics-code approved Marvel comic, but also in how incisive thought provoking and disquieting its look at the appeal of vigilante fiction to the reader, and real life. Writer Steve Gerber was on fire with this one.

A point made by Claire Noto in her recent interview suggested that she believed Red Sonja could have been a breakout character in pop culture on the level of Howard the Duck. I think she might've been right, because in 1975 there was apparently a Red Sonja *convention?*
Roy Thomas' announcement of the "big, brawling" Sonja Con to be held at the Travelodge Hotel in the NJ/Philadelpha area on Nov 20-21."PMM, FFF, MARVEL READER" sends a letter to the Red Sonja team to gush about the Sonja Con.
