I have written a piece that breaks this down clearly. What fandom really is. How it works for brands. And why direct-to-fan thinking is essential for anyone who wants loyalty rather than surface attention.

You only see that when you own the connection.

It is about having a group of people who stay with you because they believe in what you stand for.

Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 15/11/2025
It means they are invested. It means they are choosing you, not just glancing at you. This is what often gets missed. Fandom is not about being seen by everyone.

It means they care enough to take a step.

When someone gives you their email or joins your community it tells you something no follower count ever will.

Creators. Music artists. Anyone who needs an audience that actually cares. Direct-to-fan is not a trend. It is simply the clearest way to understand who supports you.

Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 15/11/2025
They communicated clearly. They built loyalty. That same approach applies to everyone now: Brands.
100
Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 15/11/2025
The real signals come from something far more human and far more reliable: 👉 Who takes action 👉 Who signs up 👉 Who stays close 👉 Who wants a direct relationship 👉 Who makes space for your brand in their daily life This is why the most successful brands focus on direct connection.

None of it proves loyalty.

Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 15/11/2025
The problem is that most of the vanity numbers people look at today simply do not tell that story. Views disappear quickly. Follower counts look big but rarely do anything. Socials can look impressive but don't show commitment.

Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 15/11/2025
Not surface engagement. Real loyalty. The kind that comes from people who choose you because they feel a connection to what you do.

Not hype.

Every brand wants reach. But the brands that grow consistently all have something far stronger. They have fandom.

Would you rather have 100,000 followers OR 1,000 real fans?

We’re live with our new platform for any size influencer and music artists. A quick click on a link or QR code and you own that relationship with your fan directly and can send mobile notifications to them when YOU want, on YOUR terms and link fans to anywhere. It’s short form messaging and works

Remember the difference. 🔴 Streaming platforms are bad for new artists. 🟢 Streaming as a medium is good.

As as for discovery? Spotify for discovery as made up - to make you fall for the fear of missing out, unless you’re a major label who has the strange superpower to place their music along side other major artists. Funny that!

Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 15/09/2025
Why give streaming platforms first dibs on new music in the first place? It’s the same as a movie being released on Netflix before cinema right?
100
Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 15/09/2025
The bigger question I put is, should new music be released on streaming platforms on release day in the first place? - Why not hold it back, make it scarce. - Why not release physical before release to streaming networks? - Why not sell the album/EP/song on Amazon and bandcamp first?

The issue with Spotify is that of course they don’t pay enough to music creators. But the model was never meant to be fair to artists either. It was meant to favor the majors with their back catalogs that were sitting on shelves doing nothing.

Fans Vs. Followers: Inside FanCircles’ Creator Monetization System
Kevin Brown, who founded and sold one of Europe’s largest affiliate networks, Affiliate Window (now Awin.com), and later managed arena tours for acts such as the Australian Pink Floyd Show, identifies a flaw in the creator economy. Too many creators, he argues, are platform-dependent and don’t control their most valuable asset: their direct relationship with […]

Spotify gives YOUR royalties to the major labels. The royalties that should be paid out to the owners of tracks on Spotify with less than 1,000 plays isn't simple kept by Spotify, it goes into a ‘distribution pot’ and is is paid out to the major record companies’. Yea, you heard right

Spotify has limited third-party developers’ access to its internal data, a move that is meant to prevent user and music data from being used to train AI models. Bit late. #spotify

Social media platforms like Instagram and X, rely on hate to exist. If you allow hateful comments, people fight. When that happens it generates more ad space. Sadly there’s more money in hateful comments and the algos accommodate this. Social media platform revenue comes from ads. Enough said.

Sorry to hear about that situation. Doesn’t sound nice at all. What we do on these situations is ban the user, and as they are IDd, they wouldn’t be able to get back in to stalk. We take it very seriously.

Hey man that’s cool. I just like that people can actually debate on here rather than hate, like on the platform we all probably came from. 👍🏼

In practise, if the platform only allows validated accounts, trolling all but stops. I have over one million people on our music artist platforms at @fancircles.com, and they cultivate a very healthy environment for both the fans and artists. We’ve been A/B testing this for over 7 years now.

Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 02/12/2024
Each platform has its own rules and it’s your choice to join in or not. What I like about this platform is, I personally put more weight on comments that are from “trusted” sources than none trusted I think as the platform grows it will become a very important metric. It’s not perfect but progress

Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 02/12/2024
You can make one up of course, but if you want to build a professional reputation, or maintain a professional reputation there’s zero point doing that. There’s a big difference in the way people act when they have one profile, and build a much better environment for all of its users rather than hate

Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 02/12/2024
Facebook and LinkedIn both require it. They have done pretty well. I also run social platforms for music artists, celebs, cult ATC show and alternative groups, and in those communities, everyone is not only happy, but proud to not have to hide behind fake names.

Kev Brown @kevbrown.co.uk · 02/12/2024
I think it’s essential to have IDs on platforms. Look at the difference between say LinkedIn and Twitter. On linked in you take care what you write, because you have one ID and it’s your reputation. On X, it’s the opposite. You can hind behind a fake ID. This breeds hate, lies and baseless comments
