The prompt was underbelly. I don't know why the accountants are in the firing line today. But they are.

The city doesn’t forgive. He always thought he controlled it, wielding numbers like weapons, pulling strings from his slick glass tower. But the streets had their own hunger. Cracks rippled through the alleys, an underbelly of malice gnawing at the edges of his neat little world. It waited, patient and hungry, for its next move.
The accountant, sweating in his crisp suit, tried harder to straighten the lines, but the numbers twisted, boiled, refusing to be tamed. The filth crept upward, into the clean glass of his tower, his pristine suit becoming a shroud.
"Checkmate."
That was the last thing he heard before his tower crumbled, the city pulling him into the abyss, a mass of hungry cloud swallowing him whole.

The #VSS365 prompt was #Trace - and I'm starting to hear the siren call of folk horror again.

The first time the floorboards sang, I thought it was mice.
But the song was in my voice.
They say witches burn clean. That’s a lie. Ours left teeth in
the hearth and a shadow in the nursery.
My grandmother painted over the sigils and scrubbed the
blood from the walls. My mother planted roses over her grave.
And me? I started humming the tune in my sleep.
Then my daughter saw.
"Mama," she whispered, staring at the floor. "Why does the
corner smell like iron?"
I pressed her face to my chest, kissed her hair, and told her
it was the damp.
But I felt it, too. Her. The scent, like old smoke. It clung to
the floorboards, to my skin, to my blood. It wasn’t just the house;
it was me.
Every night since I came back to this place, I felt her watching.
The floorboards creak as if something’s moving beneath them.
And I know it’s not rats.
I hear her song. A lullaby.
“The witch is never gone,” I said. “She’s always in the soil.”
But last night, when I closed my eyes, I saw her standing in
the kitchen, hands outstretched, glowing with green flame.
She smiled. And I knew her.
She was my mother. She was me.
She’s waiting. She’s still waiting, buried deep in the roses.
She’s coming for me.
And I can’t stop humming. The trace of her sings. in my skin.
