I’m looking for examples of walking used in protest or resistance in Scotland. I have the suffragette march in Edinburgh in 1909 and the hunger marches of the 1930s, but is there anything earlier? And what about later? All pointers gratefully received #BookSky #WalkingScotland

Hi folks. For my current WiP, I’m looking to get some information about how people might have celebrated the enactment of the 2003 Land Reform (Scotland) Act. If you know of any celebrations or events please drop me a line! TIA.

Six years ago Wanderers: A History of Women Walking went into the world. I never expected to write a book that would reach so many; I continue to be humbled by the stories told to me by readers of what it has meant. And to see it translated into Korean, Chinese, German and soon French is just 🥰

Wow. I was *incredibly* lucky to have built up a solid Plan B, one that eventually enabled me to return to HE after I was made redundant-in a different country, in a different subject. If you teach in UK in HE right now, get yourself a Plan B. And god help the students and uni city/town residents.

It’s nineteen years ago today that I both got left on Snowdon by a bunch of unkind men, and helped to the top by a bunch of wonderful supportive women. I had no idea at the time how formative that experience would be, and that it would be a key influence for and opening scene in Wanderers.

I’ve volunteered to speak to a bunch of children at my son’s school. I need to talk to 9/10 year olds and 6/7 year olds about writing and being a writer, and ideally get the older ones doing some writing. Any top tips? I’m feeling a little unfriendly towards past me at the moment 🫠🤦‍♀️

Maternal Mental Health week means a lot to me. This Maternal Mental Health week, let’s not have more moralising about whether mums should have outdoors adventures with their babies (yes you, Press & Journal), but more awareness that maternal mental health deserves real social support.

Dearest #BookSky and Romanticism folks, what is the best published source for Coleridge’s account of his trip to Scotland with the Wordsworths? I have Carol Kyros Walker on my radar, but would love an actual edition of the diary/letters. Any leads, or indeed big obvious books I’ve missed?
