For Dolly Parton Day, a little “Jolene.” Few songs show the power of a name quite like this one. Dolly turns jealousy, vulnerability, beauty, and fear into a story that feels almost like family lore set to music. #DollyPartonDay #Jolene #Kentucky #FamilyHistory

Genealogy Fieldcraft
Record Exact Source Citations As You Go
One of the most common mistakes in family history?
“I’ll go back and cite that later.”
Later rarely comes.
Fieldcraft means documenting your sources at the exact moment you find them.
Every full citation should include:
• Repository name
• Collection title
• Volume or book number
• Page number
• Image number
• URL
• Access date
Digital links break. Indexes get updated. Pagination changes. Platforms redesign.
If you don’t capture it in real time, you may never reconstruct it accurately.
Strong genealogy isn’t just about finding records.
It’s about building work that can stand up to scrutiny.
That’s Genealogy Fieldcraft.
Many family historians work alone — but they don’t have to.
Join the Kentucky Genealogical Society for year-round instruction, research insight, and a statewide community committed to disciplined, credible family history.

Auschwitz was at the end of a process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers. This hatred gradually developed: from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.
A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.

Each year on Jan 25, #BurnsNight honors Scotland’s poet Robert Burns—a celebration of song and memory. If your roots trace to Scotland or the Scots-Irish in KY, join Kentucky Scots-Irish Ancestors Front Porch Talks. 🪑 2nd Tuesday | 7pm ET Pull up a chair. There’s aye room on the porch. #Genealogy
O Hearts Still Warmed by Song and Story
Each year around January 25, people around the world gather to celebrate Burns Night, honoring Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. Burns was a farmer, a keen observer of ordinary life, and a writer who believed that everyday people—and their stories—mattered. His poems and songs gave voice to friendship, love, loss, humor, and memory, reminding us that what binds us together is often found in shared words and shared time.
At the heart of Burns Night is fellowship—voices raised together, stories shared freely, and the understanding that heritage lives best when spoken aloud. It is not about perfection or pedigree, but about connection: listening as much as telling, remembering as much as recording. That same spirit lives on whenever people gather to talk family, place, and possibility—leaning in, learning together, and keeping the conversation going.
Burns understood that what we carry is not always visible. A tune learned young. A line remembered. A way of naming the land. When Scots and Scots-Irish families left familiar hills behind, they brought those things with them—crossing oceans, following rivers, and settling where the land felt speakable. Kentucky became a place where old words met new valleys, where accents softened but stories held fast, and where the past continued to walk quietly alongside the present.
If your family history traces back to Scotland, Ulster, or the Scots-Irish migration into Kentucky, you’re warmly invited to join our Kentucky Scots-Irish Ancestors Front Porch Talk.
🪑 2nd Tuesday of each month
