From Brian Jarman’s inequality maps of the 1970s to David Widgery’s activism it also gives me hope that the fight to tackle inequality is still out there, even if sadly lacking from the current government agenda. This is not the end of the story!

From M’Gonigle and Kirby,‘Poverty and Public Health’, 1936. This features in the exhibition I’m curating on health inequalities. Hospital admissions for malnutrition were on the rise even before today’s welfare cuts.
Children may, and in fact not infrequently do, grow up healthily in spite of a bad material environment. They may avoid clinical illnesses due to infections, though exposed to the infections; they may survive, undamaged, illnesses resulting from the invasion of their tissues by pathogenic microorganisms, but they cannot survive unscathed prolonged deprivations or deficiencies of certain essentials for normal nutrition.

Great day talking about nursing and the climate crisis @fulhampalace.bsky.social. The only photo I took was a (lovely) pond, but all the speakers were fantastic. Especially wowed by the idea of zero emission steam from the Museum of Water and Steam which I must now visit!

30 years ago today.💔 I don't remember what I was doing, because Richey's disappearance wasn't made public for about 2 weeks. I did memorise his car numberplate in case he passed me on my way to school though. I still remember it.

Enjoying revisiting 'Mind Boggling Medical History' for a new project. This was a card game Sally Frampton and I developed where every statement was a current, past or fictional medical theory or practice. Here's an easy one to start with...
Picture of a brain with text on top: "A moving uterus, floating up into the body, causes nervous symptoms in women, such as aches, pains, fainting and paralysis."

I don’t know her name – presumably, like me, she was from Kent. I do know she was a patient in the 1870s, when she drew this sketch of Bethlem as a bird cage. Bethlem’s chaplain described his peek inside her sketchbook in 1899, and later used the artist’s cartoon to illustrate talks.
A sketch of a bird cage with some at the top. Birds with human faces are inside the cage, one smoking a pipe. Two men stand either side, while two more human birds fly above

Kentish Scribbler was an anonymous contributor to the Bethlem Hospital magazine, ‘Under the Dome’, from its first published volume in 1892 until her death in 1902 (her obituary appeared in the mag). Find it @bethlemmuseum.bsky.social

Love coming across statistical maps in the archive! This one is hand coloured to illustrate the potential impact industrial areas along the Thames had on the entirety of North East London in the late 1970s (NB no context or other possible factors included).
Hand coloured map of London with industrial areas along the East Thames and in South and West London coloured blue. Areas are coloured to represent mortality rates from bronchitis and emphysema in 1977 ranging from yellow (35-39 per 100K) in SE and NW London to black (56-60 per 100K) in central East London. Outer East (Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Barking & Havering) are all dark purple (50-55 per 100K).

Today exploring history of #HealthInequalities in the Politics of Health Group archive at the Wellcome Library. Some interesting 1970s/80s critiques of how the NHS replicated pre-existing inequalities, eg through continued rise of hospital medicine #HistMed
Extract from typed pamphlet outlining the percent of NHS budget spent on hospitals, GP services and community health. Hospitals increased 1951-1976 from 56% to 63% of budget and both GP and community declined to 6.1% each. Text goes on to state: “No occupational health service was established, and health education has
remained a token effort.
The setting up of the NHS coincided with a growth period for hospital medicine and even inside this sector it was the curing rather than the caring specialities that did best. Geriatrics, mental illness and mental handicap were neglected.
In 1976 only 4.5% of NHS expenditure was on the mentally handicapped, 7.5% on the mentally ill and 13.6% on the elderly and handicapped.”
