I really hope that men like those at Cornell University, like those who assault and murder, like those who order and orchestrate genocide, like those who watch and do nothing, get the full justice they deserve. However even better would be if they had learned never to do it in the first place.

I've learned over the years that girls and women deal with this kind of shit *all the time*, just by existing, just because they are there. And that authorities may ignore or talk you out of wanting them to do anything about it.

I am a man. There are times I've felt unsafe as an adult, walking down dark streets in the city, but I can probably count those times on one hand. I can only imagine that if me, 6' and solid, felt unsafe then any woman in that same situation could be terrified - just by being there.

I "kind of" wanted to press charges but the police talked me out of it, I guess they didn't want to do any more work. In the end I walked away a little scratched and bruised, physically and emotionally, but not scarred for life.

I wasn't badly hurt, fortunately, he was too drunk to aim properly. I called my sister's fiancé and he collected me, we made a police report. The police told me how they'd found him passed out over a barb wire fence (semi-rural area), planted face-first in the dirt.

One planted himself before me and asked - demanded - to know what I was reading. As I raised my head, he punched me in the face. I fell over sideways and he hit me a few more times, before he and his friends left. I have no idea if they pulled him off me or they just decided they'd had their "fun".

Years later, as a new adult, I was on the way home from university, waiting at a train station to catch the bus. A group of teen boys came walking along; they were rumbustious in a way that broadcast they were drunk. I kept my head down in the book I was reading and ignored them.

At some point I became uncomfortable. I made excuses and extradited myself from the situation, jogging off back down the beach toward where my family was staying. I never saw him again. I never mentioned it to my family. I realised maybe only a few years later that I dodged being assaulted.

He pulled out a magazine - yes, one of *those*, and started showing me the pictures. I was wearing a tracksuit (sweat) top and at one point, I remember, he reached over and pressed down on a fold - I realised later he thought I had an erection and he was trying to feel it.

I looped up and back from the pier. One time on the way up, an older gentleman started talking to me. I don't recall now what we talked about; he was asking about what I was doing I guess. I remember he was nice and pleasant. I ended up seated on a bench next to him.

"Not all men." When I was pre-teen, my family went on a beach holiday as we often did with relatives. One morning for some reason, I decided to go running along the beach. I don't know why, I wasn't one for any more exercise than what a kid my age would get just existing.
