Michigan’s only quality win is against UTEP. (Oklahoma, as is tradition, was comically overrated.) The Wolverines should be 2-3.

Ten years ago, today, I got a coughing fit mid-wedding ceremony. I excused myself. When I recovered I stood near the back, along the side, and saw this. @laurensmith.bsky.social @bmoritz99.bsky.social @michaelmirer.bsky.social @jerryhinnen.bsky.social @edsbs.bsky.social @hollyanderson.bsky.social
This is a picture of two guys in a church pew watching a football game on their phone.

The text reads, “Yes, he was watching football during a wedding. That's what happens when you book a ceremony in the fall. #UTVSUGA”

Beyond the decency and human rights and whatever other legal issues come into play here theres a political one that we realize but don’t acknowledge: if farmers are your base, you don’t have a base. (The number of people owning and working farms in this country is a very low one.)

My favorite thing to do with these stories is to look at the earnings report, do the very simple percentage analysis and point out that this is simply the cost of doing business. It’s a pitiable thing.

Me, laughing at the thought of taking a photo of this sign. Also me, almost neglecting the advice of the sign.
A “PLEASE DO NOT PUT TRAYS IN THE GARBAGE” sign above a cafe’s garbage can, where the flap on the hide completes the sign, and your lunch, “THANK YOU.”

You are welcome, garbage can also, that last tray? That’s mine.

You are worth $16.81 bucks a day to this guy.
1 trillion divided by our highwater mark of 170 million people in the American workforce (a Jan 2025 statistic, naturally). The remainder is 5,882. That’s your last extra healthy year of Oz work. Divided by 350 — because let’s assume this grubby charlatan will give you a few days off to see your grandkids and rub in Icy Hot and have a holiday — leaves us with $16.81 cents per day, for the last year of work.

Andy Griffith’s movie debut was “A Face In The Crowd,” a 1950s satire that was already art imitating life. This drifter becomes a megastar. Lonesome Rhodes becomes an egomaniac before he is “oops” outed on a hot mic. People keep waiting for a Lonesome Rhodes moment, but we have social media.

Why isn't the Academy of Natural Sciences building historically protected?

The thing about open road bike racing, even now, is there’s a lot about the event we, the spectators, don’t know, even with modern tech. The empty spots are even more pronounced a century on. But, if there’s credible source material, I’d read books on important and insightful anecdotes like this.
Desgrange received a letter after he arrived in Luchon. "Monseiur le Directeur," it began. "Each year the valiant cyclists have passed through my small town and I've never failed to give them a bit of assistance." The letter continued, "For four years the Tour didn't take place. Like all of us, I became a soldier and I regret it this year because I'll be deprived of applauding the kings of the road when they pass through my country.

"But I do want to do something for them. I would therefore be grateful if you would give the final cyclist to pass through Narbonne the modest sum of five francs, which I'm pleased to offer to the Tour. Please accept it from a petit poilu who would like to do more, but who can't right now."

The letter had a return address to Parc Aero no. 8, in the Marne, and was signed by Alphonse Rouvier. The letter spoke to Desgrange, though plenty of larger sums had been donated by groups along the way. He sent the letter to the newspaper's offices to be included in the following day's paper. Rouvier represented what Desgrange had hoped for when he first announced that year's Tour. The editor then knew there were people in the country who didn't view the race as froth, something that would just pass them by, but an event to be remembered.

Absolutely perfect day for riding bikes. In 30 miles, however, I did not see another cyclist. Maybe they went out earlier; maybe they spent their whole ride wondering where I was. Probably they were just happy and grateful. #bikes #cycling #LetsGoRideBikes #TheMilesAhead #bikesky @bikesky.social
Cornfield below a blue sky with little dots of contemplative fluffy clouds. When you go through a spot that is built through a slough and it’s below sea level and the tide is in. A bridge over untroubled waters. There’s been a bridge here for more than a 150 years. Probably not this bridge, though. The second beach ball I’ve seen in the last three days. The universe is trying to tell me something.

You can’t get the easy part wrong and expect people to go along with the important part. Credibility matters. It took me 14 seconds to find an airline that flies there and look for tickets a few days out. That’s not a $250 flight. The point remains, but, c‘mon, Post, refresh your browser.

Now the senator has to decide if people think he’s Supplicant Ted or Traveling Ted. Is he carrying the water? Or is he that out of touch? Tough spot for Ted Cruz.
Ted Cruz, hassing a sad, because he’s doing this for photos and party unity and because he’s scare of his constituency and what he thinks they want from him. Ted Cruz hassing a happy, except for wearing that freedom mask, because he’s missing an ice storm for beautiful Cancun.

Also, Henri Pelissier, who may or may not (I won’t spoil the results of a 112-year-old race) be getting outsized coverage.
Those who watched him—the journalists and the other cyclists— couldn't help but notice the lengths he went to treat his sport seriously.
He didn't always win—too many variables existed on the course for that sort of consistency—but he always did everything in his power to tilt the stakes in his favor. Cycling was their sport, their social activity as well as their countries. Cycling didn't encompass their lives, though, as it did for Henri. He padded his training with substances to improve his abilities, though he was hardly the only one. Strychnine stimulated muscle activity. Nitroglycerine improved his breathing, though it risked hallucinations and exhaustion. Ether deadened his pains, even while he rode, one hand removed from the handlebars, a handkerchief lifted to his face. It was tolerated by everyone-pharmaceutical companies advertised in l'Auto, and the drugs were freely given out by team train-ers. Henri rubbed chloroform against his gums and dropped liquid cocaine into the corners of his eyes. He avoided alcohol due to its lingering effects the next day, but in that year's Tour, it was unclear what the state of drinking water would be in cities closer to the front.

For some reason, and maybe this becomes clearer, there are asides on the war, not just the racer’s experiences, but the American 813th Pioneer regiment which was briefly in France. This, and units like it deserve more attention than they have received? But how does that figure here?

I’m five chapters and 101 pages in and there’s something missing. I think it needs more of all of the things I’m interested in. Dobkin gives a real nod to the importance of the still young race, culturally, but you could write a lot more about this.
France for them had been limited to the land they encountered each week or month, when they rode to the next town to buy groceries or to repair their farm tools. When the Tour first began, the map l'Auto printed each year-displaying the circuit the cyclists would trace— provided the people with a sense of place that limited educations did not. A national map was a relatively new accessory in primary school classrooms. The people in those towns, with scarcely any connection to politicians in Paris, began to feel like they were part of the race, the larger country, the route that extended from the western coast to the changing border in the east. When the Alsace was reclaimed in the Great War, people who had irregular contact with the northeast could see, in definite terms, how it changed the shape of their country even if they didn't understand the new lands' ramifications to foreign affairs or hadn't learned of its mythology. Their collective payment—the lives of their families and their friends- had gone toward reclaiming that border. They had little say over that cost, but the Tour at least gave them some ownership of that territory as part of the whole.
