That kids throw themselves off of bridges at Cornell is a feature of its' topography. Ithaca Is Gorges exists as a slogan for a reason! The campus is beautiful and has a shit ton of bridges! I've been to Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Penn and Dartmouth! they don't have bridges!

Schools that HAVE historically had higher than average suicide rates but have gotten far less attention for this include Harvard and MIT. Cornell's handling of Jane Doe's rape case is fucked up but it has NOTHING to do with its incidence of suicide and conflating the two cheapens her trauma.

Since I'm seeing this on here and on tiktok. Cornell's suicide rates are on par with the national average for college suicides. People think they're higher because the unusual way that students at Cornell historically killed themselves (jumping off of bridges) captured national attention /1

Yeah that was a weird period but it's also around the same time NYU had a bunch of suicides with students jumping from a balcony in it's library. They had to close the library to rejigger it. The fact remains that Cornell's suicide rates aren't on average (median) unusual.

I think it depends on the school. I said in the thread MIT which DOES have a higher than average suicide rate, bullied (jokingly) me into therapy. They also sent out emails which if you read between the lines you could tell was a student who died by suicide 1/

And yes there are fences and nets because when a student chooses to die by suicide they will often pick a bridge, and the nature of the campus means there are lots of them. But that doesn't mean the rate of suicide is unusual.

It's methodology is sparse - there's no way of even knowing what average means in this context (mean or median), it also lumps together suicide with undisclosed and doesn't seem to normalize for school size. It says Cornell had 7 and Princeton had 8 - Cornell has ~ 3x the student population

The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward. You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

There's an apocryphal story that Cornell was featured in some PBS news show or documentary about suicides in like the late 1970s or early 1980s and that's why the suicide mantal stuck. IDK if it's true and I'm too lazy to dig it out.

The jumping off of bridges thing IS true and students, at least when I was in undergrad, would make gallows humors jokes about it. Also, sometimes a student would cut through a gorge after a night out partying (do not do this) slip, fall and die.

A school that does have a higher-than-average suicide rate is MIT, and when I landed on campus they basically bullied me into therapy. They made it so clear that they wanted you in therapy and that campus insurance would cover it. I ended up quitting because I didn't need it at the time.

This isn't true. Cornell has suicide rates on par with peer institutions (which to be clear is not great). The idea that Cornell has unusually high suicide rates traces back to the manner of suicide (jumping into the gorges) being especially dramatic. Do not make me defend this institution RN.

It's a student paper. In some schools student papers are attached to the university. My point is the Cornell Daily Sun is not. It's fully independent. Its office isn't even on campus. If you like the work they're doing you should toss them some cash.

The other side of this is, of course, many daycare workers are so poorly paid they are low income. Free daycare could actually solve both issues. Freeing parents to join the workforce and paying workers a living wage.

Many low income people are in fact stay at home parents because the cost of daycare is so high that their salary if they went to work would not cover it.
