Had a dream last night where I found this great PDF of house building materials in a timeline with imagery and house styles it was most associated with. I was like I can't wait to share this resource. Woke up disappointed.

And here are some photos of those furnishings.

Black and white photo of dining room from 1927 Oakland Post Enquirer. Included in photo is wood dining room table and chairs, rug, sideboard and tall plant stand holding a fern. Title of photo says "Furnished by Montgomery Ward"

Kendra Gaylord @kendragaylord.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

This home in Oakland was originally a model home furnished by Montgomery Ward in 1927.

Image on left shows google maps screenshot of french eclectic house from Oakland, CA. On the right is a clipping from a newspaper in 1927 with the same house. The text on the newspaper says "Visit Oxford House--- Ward's Model Home. Oxford House is situated in Oxford Gardens -- 55th Avenue and Walnut St. Open for inspection daily from 10 to 12; 2 to 5, and 7 to 9."

Kendra Gaylord @kendragaylord.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

In the 1920s stores like Sears and Montgomery Ward would furnish new builds with furniture so that people could see what it might look like in their homes.

One of the most challenging things for me on YouTube is trying to convince an algorithm that stamps are cool. For some reason it was easy on TikTok, but YT just can’t believe a vlog about a stamp convention should be shown to the masses..

I quoted Charles Dickens' visit to the New Lebanon Shaker Village a lot from his book American Notes for General Circulation. His dedication thanks his friends for hosting and taking his criticism in good humor.

Dedication from American Notes for General Circulation by Charles Dickens.
Says: "I DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO THOSE FRIENDS OF MINE IN AMERICA WHO, GIVING ME A WELCOME I MUST EVER GRATEFULLY AND PROUDLY REMEMBER, LEFT MY JUDGMENT FREE; AND WHO, LOVING THEIR COUNTRY, CAN BEAR THE TRUTH, WHEN IT IS TOLD GOOD HUMOUREDLY, AND IN A KIND SPIRIT.

All of these images seem to be based on the same original image but changed for the format they would be printed in. I always find that path of reproduction to be so interesting. I have put them in order of the year I found them published, but hard to know the original: 1826, 1835, 1847, 1873

This one's about the Shakers. Intentional community and chair builder extraordinaires. I thought I knew about the Shakers, but it turns out like most things I was merely looking at the surface and the depths of knowledge are unlimited. As are the baskets.

See if you can get Paxlovid ASAP! It truly saved me last time I caught it. First time COVID made my POTS worse than ever before, second time with Paxlovid i was recovered in 4 days and nothing cognitive like the first time around.

Happy Halloween! A little quote from Dracula about using teamwork, science, free will to fight a strong murderous enemy!

"Well, you know what we have to contend against; but we, too, are not without strength. We have on our side power of combination-a power denied to the vampire kind; we have sources of science; we are free to act and think; and the hours of the day and the night are ours equally. In fact, so far as our powers extend, they are unfettered, and we are free to use them. We have self-devotion in a cause, and an end to achieve which is not a selfish one. These things are much.”

Getting *slightly* more comfortable on camera has been my biggest accomplishment. You really need to watch and practice so much before it feels anything like being in the same room. Shoutout to TikTok for giving me a place to practice and embarrass myself gradually.

Last year YouTube introduced A/B tests for thumbnails and I don't know if I like them. I've used them consistently since then, but I don't love that everyone experiences the video a little differently. So here are all the thumbnails and if YT makes a choice you can be like... ugh they are so wrong.

The New Yorker put out an article in May on 'notable New Yorkers' living rooms. Then I compiled all the photos into a spreadsheet so I could say "89% of 'notable New Yorkers' have white walls."
