Museum garden bun has been given a name - Pipkin. 🐇 For those who have never come across this adorable word: Pipkin noun a small clay pot (= a container for cooking or serving food) with a handle sticking out of the side.

My first visit to the excellent @kendalmuseum.bsky.social yesterday. Amongst the archaeological material, we met these two charmers
A horse's lovely face. It is chestnut coloured with a white patch down its nose. It's wearing a bridleA large taxidermy bear wrapped in plastic with googly eyes. The sign on it reads - bear with us, conservation care in progress, we promise it's not hibernating forever.

Whenever anyone says something like, “historians believe…” please remember that I’m a historian and I still won’t eat apple pips in case a tree grows out my head and I die.

Postcard from my collection, sent 1912.
Vintage illustrated postcard with a drawing of a medium haired cat tangled up in string with a bandage around its head looking quite pathetic. Text on it says I have troubles of my own. Don’t mention yours.

Of course I prefer my cats to be alive, but the goth part of me can't help but adore this little cat skull. Perks of working at a museum I guess?

This Mesolithic amber figurine from Denmark is conclusive proof that The Wombles were around long before the 70s.
A mall orange figurine carved from amber, with a long snout, facing right. Officially it is a bear, but it has the distinctive whiff of Bungo to us.

🐝 Happy World Bee Day! 🌼 At the museum, we’re buzzing with appreciation for these incredible insects. We've been out in our beautiful little garden to see who we can find - pictured is an early bumblebee and a tree bumblebee. Next time you're in your garden or local park, see who you can spot!

Huge thanks to artist Lela Harris for her inspiring talk on 18th-century Black lives in Northern England. You can see some of her artwork at Abbot Hall Art Gallery and the Judges’ Lodgings Museum, where visitors can discover the fascinating and often overlooked histories of Black Lancastrians.
