One day a week (sometimes more) I take my 89 year old, mildly demented mother on errands, appointments, and wherever else she desires to go. She has high needs and squeezes into her tiny purse inside which things disappear.

For the last few days this lovely little Goldfinch has been coming to our window feeder. She’s injured or perhaps born without an eye, yet she finds her way back here everyday. We will add new and better foods to the feeder and help her out for as long as she continues to come.

Heading out on a retreat with limited contact. Usually that’s rejuvenating. This time I’m not entirely sure what kind of world I will return to. The possibility of a complete and increasingly violent constitutional crisis at home and the beginnings of a world war in the Middle East is real.

I spend a great deal of time explaining to my 88 year old mother what is and isn’t true on the internet. She’s easily misled and prone to panic and paranoia. We’ve reached the point where I’m telling her to assume nothing is true. This technologically advanced world is working out great.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.
