Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 16hThis morning we had six Deses. Also this evening, though four of em had a real go at ending themselves by leaping nonchalantly into the flooded creek (much to Ngaire's horror - I understand why she prefers them in this wee ephemeral pond). All was well in the end, phew. #nzbirds 120 2
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 23hDown to 6 this morning 😨 hopefully they'll be back in the creek this afternoon, safer there! Usually this type of duck are absolutely fierce and exemplary parents but I think the weather has foiled them 🫠 110 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 16/10/2026Greatest compliment 😂 in fact I went to genuine Lengths to get my porch geese - worth it 110 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 16/10/2026Well, my porch goose outfit is done. And I've got a matching overshirt thingy (the #readytosewjames which I think she's actually just decommissioned - a shame as I adore it). Now we need to fill the goose up with a bit of sand and then they can live outside for summer. 3150 15
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 15/10/2026Today's Des pūtangitangi update is not a great one sorry team: we have lost 2 since about 3pm yesterday 😞 You do expect attrition, it's nature after all, and they live in a public space - but it's sad when it happens. This morning everyone seems in fine spirits though. Pragmatic little guys 😅 240 4
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 15/10/2026Haha I'm pleased you're enjoying them too! 🥹 I am constantly looking forward to next seeing the wee dears 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 15/10/2026Making a porch goose outfit and I HAD wondered about the sleeves but no arms 🤔 160 6
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 15/10/2026Ugly mode is indeed the mixture of down and adult feathers heading into teenagehood 😂 I don't love them any less though! 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 15/10/2026Yes I've got tons of pics from last year but I will be reprising my role as their personal photographer nonetheless 😂 I lost track until a few weeks before moulting where the girls developed white borders around their bills. I've also found a weird dearth of info about them in places 🤔 000 0
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 15/10/2026Please do!! I know, we only get a few weeks before they go ugly (but still cute) mode 110 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 15/10/2026I have a pūtangitangi update! The Deses Nine are still 9, and oh my gosh they're all just little mischief puffs. It was really horrendous weather this morning when we kitted up and went walking but it was so worth it to see my little darlings! They've been in the creek for days but it's well up. 5316 31
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 14/10/2026Ngaire's porch goose analog is going to get a flamingo themed dress 😂 0111 11
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 13/10/2026Yes hahaha they're so inquisitive. Lefty was just up the creek, they operate like life guards with the chicks between them 🥹 you see them leap frogging the chick mob down the creek. Such good parents 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 13/10/2026& get this: Gladys the goose, who left the park a while ago and has been a lot more mobile around town lately, has hooked up with [what I'm .. unreliably told is] a young male in the park across the road. We go and see her every so often and discovered the new boyfriend ALSO has a busted wing? 🪶🇳🇿 020 2
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 13/10/2026And, one of the Goldie sisters hatched her clutch the other day and she's managed to keep all 8 so far. Which is frankly a miracle, seeing as she's a mallard. I think her boyfriend is helping out though. Interestingly none of them are yellow (Goldie was a yellow!!! chick) #nzbirds 030 3
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 13/10/2026My darling pūtangitangi ducklings are still thriving, and they're huge! Still 9 little Deses. They've mostly been in the creek, and I think it's safer as they're still being targeted by enemy females. Today one dive bombed them as I watched, rude. But Lefty saw her off. #nzbirds 131 3
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 13/10/2026Yeeeeeah no I think I'm actually quite into it 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 12/10/2026I finished my #sewliberateddungivendress the other day and have worn it ever since as a duster, despite my suspicion that actually I made a fashion labcoat. It's comfy as. Like a robe, basically. I recommend. 2270 27
Reposted by Kelsy - formerly FaiakoJosh Michtom @rsgat.bsky.social · 10/10/2026I sewed a flag for the bus route by my house, using only recycled materials. 0162 16
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 11/10/2026The thing is right, we have been hanging out with the parents every morning for months so I think we've been accepted as Big Ducks 😂 and it feels like a real privilege that they have clearly told the chicks we're okay 🥹🥹 when they brought them over on the very first day I legit nearly cried 😂😂 100 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 11/10/2026I edit my own voice out of A LOT hahahaha it's partly me conducting a whole very affirming convo with the parents (wow Ngai what a good mum aw you're doing a great job Lefty keep it up) and partly noises I make involuntarily when e.g. one cleans itself too enthusiastically and falls over 🥹 100 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 11/10/2026At one point there was a bit of creek foam floating along with them and I really thought it might collect a duckling 😅 020 2
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 11/10/2026The little wings absolutely kill me they're such silly little flappys 100 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 11/10/2026This morning it was swimming in the creek practice for the little pūtangitangi Deses (still 9!). They'd managed to get the whole clan up a little waterfall even. Might pop back this evening to see if they're back at the pond. #nzbirds 1136 13
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 10/10/2026Right!! And also get a load of how quick on land when mum calls them lol. 151 5
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 10/10/2026I absolutely love her little mummy noise 🥹 the chicks seem to follow her by it and I can't blame them, I'd follow her too given half a chance lolol 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 10/10/2026Listen I'm a pūtangitangi fan account for the next little while. Do you blame me? Seen here, two of the wee Deses try out grazing with ... Results. Ngaire and Lefty coach. The other Deses mill in the background. #nzbirds 2287 28
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 10/10/2026Hahaha this is so accurate, what ARE the mallards up to honestly 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 10/10/2026Today we sat down with Ngaire, Lefty and the nine babies (all named Des) for half an hour. I got these 3 minutes of true pūtangitangi whānau ASMR - one clip is muted sorry because you really don't deserve to be subjected to the AI Parkrun songs. But otherwise lots of lovely Ngaire clucks #nzbirds 3268 26
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026Yeah it was the duster option that got me because I think I'll wear it like that through summer. I used a slubby linen broadcloth which may actually have a wee bit of wool too. It's more structured than drapey but really soft. Denim would be cool!! 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026I do have it! Might move it up the priority queue 100 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026Yes I think I've seen that, I might even have it.. I ought to investigate. Would love a blouse like it too, might hack this one. I think about 4 or 5 indie pattern makers that I know of have released one of these in the last year, it seems they became more of a thing in ready to wear lately. 110 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026I comes with a lot of recommended ease even through the waist (I've taken the waist in on mine 2 inches) so could be worth looking at. Prob because it's designed to optionally be a cardi too. I did do a bit of social media stalking to see if anyone with my body type had made it ha 220 2
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026Yesss it's so trendy and so I didn't expect it, but this feels deliciously comfy! I have always liked a fit and flare, this is a really nice version of it IMO. 110 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026Thanks! I was thinking that too. The pattern has a short sleeve version but I think I prefer sleeveless to that so I might amend the armscye. 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026Thank you! I am trying to become more of a dress wearer haha, we'll see how I go 🤔 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026Thank you! I do too, turns out they were worth the many steps 😅 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026Thank you! Same, I think I might convert most side seam pockets to welts from here on in 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026I did actually get some #garmentsewing done too. This is the #sewliberateddungivendress, sleeves and collar and hem facing still to add. I love these weird little pleats. I've got a set of leggings + sports bra for a test too, that I have to get photos of tomorrow and hopefully can share soon 👀 6140 14
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026They are 10/10! So cute that even the burly ride on mower bloke backed the mower up for a closer look and to take photos 😂 010 1
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026Just the best 🥹 They'll have great little personalities developing too, they're sassy 020 2
Kelsy - formerly Faiako @kelsy.co.nz · 09/10/2026They sure have. Nine little chonks too which is excellent, hopefully a bit more eel and cormorant proof 010 1
