Major #AI execs, including those proven incapable of self regulation, sign "morally binding" voluntary controls. “It’s almost like a constitution” says Trump, who currently faces hundreds of lawsuits related to constitutional violations. In other news, foxes pinky swear to guard henhouse.

A Meta official told reporters last week, “I think legislation would have been the best answer to this issue.” But Meta and its lobby have been (and continue to) push back on broad mandates on constitutional grounds, but never with solutions. Now we have them.

“For years, the industry argument has largely been that companies should be trusted to develop safety measures themselves,” Stonelake said. “Now Meta is effectively saying that voluntary action by one company is insufficient and that an industry-wide standard is necessary.“

One of my Substack subscribers sent me a screenshot of Meta already advertising an open letter to TikTok and YouTube to join them in “supporting teens.” I shouldn’t be surprised, but it is surreal after they’ve spent years categorically denying the role of their products in youth harms.

Different stories but the same authoritarian & patriarchal habits of exploitation & impunity. Domination is protection, intentions & ambitions are a substitute for accountability, people who expose harm are punished & vilified, & consequences are imposed on less powerful people as costs of progress.

My girl @kathleenicanrah.bsky.social’s Tiny Love Story in the NYT (again!!) today!
Coming Late, Leaving Early
I got to the party late; everyone was a few drinks in. The music was too loud. The married man hugged me for too long. Three years into not drinking, I felt as sober as could be. A woman asked loudly how my dying mother was doing. I yelled back: “Bad!” I grabbed my husband’s hand, made a face. We left the party early. At home, I picked up a novel and crawled into bed. Three hours later, I stood up, astonished at how words on a page could make me fall in love with the world again. — Kathleen DonahoePhoto: The author reading in her yard with her children
