Last night I had a dream that the setting for a just-announced Magic set was called "Ringblastia" and I was really mad about it It had mage-rings and jungles, and monkeys from across the Multiverse had traveled there through the Omenpaths

I’m trying to think how many more of these you can make that are both true and functional. Whenever a creature deals combat damage to a player, they lose that much life?

You should assume to a first approximation that basically every AAA game franchise with a sufficiently large cast has a dating sim pitch sitting around that the designers were perfectly serious about but got laughed off by someone higher up

Pretending the days after Sept. 11, 2001 were some kind of gauzy Hallmark special when we came together as a country is nauseating and ahistorical. The country went completely insane and has not recovered

Anyway, Alison's phenomenal as always, this story's very good, the Lili/Opal dynamic is just one of the many reasons why, and it is a damned pleasure to see the Magic story go deep like this. Go read it! /end

We need to make mistakes to grow. That's just one of the themes of this story, and it isn't belabored, but it's right there on the page, in the persons of Liliana and Opal. (The other duplicates rightly get less screen time--they have less to add thematically!)

Kelly Digges @kellydigges.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Our Liliana is better than she once was--maybe not good, but better--*because* she suffered through hard times and bad decisions and genuine regret for the things she did. Opal, far from being a lazy opposite, illuminates just how far Liliana has come--and the fatal flaw of Jace's plan.
2271
Kelly Digges @kellydigges.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Opal made objectively better choices. Never killed her brother. Never made deals with demons or dragons. Never suffered, never made mistakes. And unlike our Liliana, she is utterly irredeemable as a person--and the story makes it clear, imo, that that's *because* she never made those mistakes.

Kelly Digges @kellydigges.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
And look, our Liliana is not nice--not in this story, not ever. But here in this story we can see the ways she's grown over the course of her story. She loves her friends. She takes responsibility for her actions. She does the right thing.
1260
Kelly Digges @kellydigges.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Opal is an antagonist, in part because that's what the story requires. She is Liliana's jailer in Jace's Echoverse, keeping the necromancer contained (in part by feeding her only fruit, which Lili can't raise to fight for her--a nice touch). Opal is also... just *awful*.
Screenshot from Magic Story that reads: The healer, the calm and radiant noble, the insufferable snob smiles at Liliana now with venom on her lips. "Do you wonder what it will be like? Me overwriting you?"

Kelly Digges @kellydigges.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Liliana *was* a healer, or healer in training, long ago in Benalia. Alison's story takes this to its logical conclusion, making it explicit that Professor Opal is not just Liliana with a palette swap and an ironic, opposite-day power set. She is a Liliana who made different choices.
Art of Liliana, Heretical Healer from MTG's Magic Origins set. Liliana is depicted here as a young woman clad in white, outside a traditional Benalish estate. Art by Karla OrtizScreenshot of Magic Story that reads: Opal smiles politely. "I think your life of suffering is what gave you your humor." She leans closer to the bars, and Liliana can make out pleading earnestness in her face. "In my Multiverse, our brother lived a full and healthy life. I chose a different path, and I saved him. Do you want me to save you, too?"

Kelly Digges @kellydigges.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
There's some great stuff going on here whose groundwork was surely laid outside Alison's story. Liliana is from Benalia on Dominaria, and Opal's dress isn't just white, it's specifically Benalish in style. Professor Opal is a healer, but this is no mere inversion of Liliana's necromancy.

Kelly Digges @kellydigges.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
She does it here with the concept of the "evil duplicate," and while there is a LOT that can be said about the psychological depths of this story, I want to zoom in on Liliana and her sickly-sweet, white-aligned duplicate, "Professor Opal."
Art of Liliana, the Faultless from MTG's Reality Fracture set. Liliana wears her usual headdress, but now wears a white dress inlaid with Benalish stained glass motifs. Art by Aleksi Briclot.

There's something Alison is genius at that's on full display here: taking a fantasy concept that's well worn, even clichéd, and finding a complex, human take on it. She did it in Ixalan with amnesia, where rather than a pulpy tale of betrayal, we got a meditation on choosing who you are.

Now, there are a lot of nice touches in this story for longtime fans of the story, from trivia like Jace having nine toes to lampshading the fact that Chandra and Ajani don't even know who Garruk IS (despite appearing in Lorwyn with him almost 20 years ago (sorry))...
Screenshot from Magic Story that reads: Chandra nods in seeming comprehension. "Garruk." She glances at Ajani and whispers, "Are we supposed to know who that is?"

Great credit is due to Alison and to @grayhaem.bsky.social and all the writers inside and outside the building who contributed. This story honors these characters and rewards fans' investment in them--and as someone who got to leave a few fingerprints on a few of them long ago, I'm grateful.

Happy #MakeATerribleComicDay2026 to all who celebrate! Here's mine and my kid's contribution. (My kid is funnier than me, it's fine.) (Yes, the kid who drew this is the same kid in my comic.) (This kid is VERY funny.) #makeaterriblecomicday
A four-panel comic depicting a child and an adult in a variety of situations. First panel: the child is holding a Royal Dansk tin full of crayons, that she knows is full of crayons, saying "I wike eat it". Second panel: child alone saying "I like to shipshayft!" (shapeshift) Third panel: adult is driving the car with the child in the back seat. The child is wearing a cat ear headband and a tail and asking "How would a Scottish Fold's ears be pierced?" Fourth panel: the adult is driving and there is a car ahead of them with a bumper sticker that reads "sometimes antisocial always antifascist", and the child in the back asks "what does antifass... that mean?"A four panel comic about a human and a cat. First panel: the human pats the cat's head saying "Aww, what a cute cat!" Second panel: the cat says "No one will believe you" Third panel: the human stares at the cat in a ... kind of way. Fourth panel: the human says "W-what...?"

someone on tumblr said it better than i could
I'm not saying be willfully ignorant. I'm not saying pretend horrible things aren't happening. I'm saying don't destroy your mental health going in-depth and cycling through horror after horror on your phone. I'm saying there is no virtue in making yourself experience other people's traumas because mere awareness is not activism. you inflicting suffering on yourself is not activism.
doomscrolling is literally sapping your energy and focus away from doing anything useful to help other people. you can burn yourself out without ever lifting a finger by exposing yourself to all the bad news in the world and who does that help? no one.

As I once put it: It's impressive that the latter half of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine captured the zeitgeist of a decade, but it's even more impressive that it was the decade after the one it aired in.
