A former Labour MP has said that the party is "dead" as she called for patience over delays in the launch of a new left-wing party.

Zarah Sultana, who has sat as an independent MP for Coventry South since losing the Labour whip last year, is a potential co-leader of the nascent Your Party with Jeremy Corbyn. She says that more than 750,000 people have already registered an interest.

Addressing 300 people in Newcastle on Saturday, at a conference of Majority, the separate left-wing group founded by Jamie Driscoll, the former Labour mayor, Sultana called Labour a “dead party" and said it had "failed to deliver for working people".

She attacked Sir Keir Starmer, calling him
"Keir Island of Strangers Starmer" and accused him of having “lied throughout his entire leadership".

"This is someone who will copy and paste Enoch Powell with the island of strangers," she said. "The authoritarianism we have seen under the Labour government frightens me."

For now the Corbyn-Sultana initiative is being referred to as Your Party, Organisers promise a "mid-autumn" conference without giving dates.
"Watch this space," she told the Guardian. "I am just as desperate to get this going, but it will take time to make sure democracy is at the heart of it. It needs to be reflective of the movement, it can't just be MP-led."
