Got a chance to finally visit @rbgkew.bsky.social while I was in London for the NPR board meeting. What a fantastic place! I spent over 4 hours marveling at all the diversity represented there and didn't make it through it all! Will have to go back again! #botany #plantscience #gardens #secmet

When teaching students about #toxicology and #secmet and #medicinal #plants, I try to find fun ways to keep the material fresh. I was rewarded yesterday when my undergrad tox class gave a hearty chuckle at my 90s era flashback for tubulin disruptors as toxins (and chemotherapy agents). Tubular!!

An 1889 paper reported ghost pipe (Monotroa uniflora) contains grayanotoxin, but our @savannahanez.bsky.social revisited this claim, using #massspec approaches to try and detect the toxins. Spoiler alert, we were unable to find any! Her work is now available in JNP! pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

I'm over the moon to say that my student Savannah had her NCCIH F31 doctoral fellowship approved for funding after being stuck in NIH administrative limbo since January. Her work is on the #secmet of Monotropa uniflora (ghost pipe), it's #ethnobotany, and potential bioactivity. Congrats Savannah!

From my understanding, an alkaloid was defined as a compound that featured an N-containing heterocycle. So cyanogenic glycosides and glucosinolates would fall outside that classification. However, I take your point in that there exists a slew of N-containing structures that fall through the cracks!
