I've been a teacher since the early 2000s, and I want to tell you that experiences like yours changed the world, at least a little bit. There was not a book fair or field trip at any of the Title 1 schools where I teach that did not have a quietly funded "bank" so that every child could participate

The dog is of course a good dog. However, the scenario seems unlikely. Dog people are not generally reticent about their love for dogs, so you couldn't have been dating for very long. She knew you were a dog person and this situation was going to come up, probably not a major 💔 for either of you

That is a lovely point about the power of music. And Gen was my favorite character! He felt like a mediator even though he didn't impose his own ideas into his translation. The very act of translation forced the people to pause between speech and actions, which helped everyone to really listen.

I was not surprised to know that it was banned in some places, unabridged dictionaries have been banned FFS. But I couldn't figure out what excuse the illiterate mob would have used for Bel Canto. The book was disturbing in places, but not in the anti-authoritarian way that usually results in a ban.

I remember that on September 11th everyone found some sort of black to wear: a shirt, a piece of cloth or ribbon, it was a spontaneous expression of shared grief. By Sept 12th the black had been replaced with little flags. We've been drowning in the fog of patriotism every day for the last 25 years.
