“We’re gonna be fine. Just a bump in the road is all. I’ll keep working at the solos and hopefully, we’ll either find a new lead or I’ll embrace the role myself. Trust me, it’s good this happened now before we get any further into things like record contracts and all that binding legal shit.”

“Chris is pretty pissed,” Dee unsuccessfully tried to stifle a giggle. “Mouth like a sailor for over a week now, doors being slammed nearly off their hinges, and music blaring on the other side of the wall at all hours.”

“Yeah, well… That’s on him. Gave him plenty of chances.” I shook my head and then glanced behind us as the crowd pressed us more against the front of the stage.
It was growing louder every passing second and I figured we had about ten more minutes before the show would begin. I looked at Rachel who was staring up at the stage, admiring the lighting trusses and amplifiers.

“Can’t wait to see you guys up there.” She looked over at me with a smile. “It’s gotta be addictive, you know? Could you imagine if this was your show? All these people here just to see you?”

“The thought is not unpleasant.”

I looked down at the flower in its plastic case, unsure if I really wanted to look at what accompanied it, but it seemed Dee was going to decide this for me. She popped the top open, fished out the note, and handed it to me as she sat down.

“Let’s see what he’s got to say.”

I set the box in my lap and opened the small piece of pale blue paper, finding his scrawled handwriting across it, though far more legible than I’d seen it in the past.
I’m so sorry I ruined tonight for you.
You look beautiful… as always.
I handed the note over to Dee and looked down at the flower. It was pretty and something I’d always had the silliest romantic notions about as a kid. A handsome man would give me a single flower, sweep me off my feet into a romantic dance, and seal it all with a toe-curling kiss. So much for fairytales.

Shawn chuckled and motioned for me to go ahead of him, lifting the box up the two steps and giving it a shove out door past me. The other five followed suit. “Where’s all your muscles, eh? You shake pom-poms for hours at games. You should be packin’ some serious guns,” he teased.
“Not sure that’s how it works.” I laughed as I opened the box nearest me and pulled out a black tablecloth, holding it patiently while Shawn looked around the interior of the massive white tent erected over the space.
“Holy shit, hon!” He laughed. “How in the hell did you do everything up there?” He pointed up at the vaulted ceiling. “Rent a cherry picker?”
“Oh, we are not speaking of that traumatizing decorating adventure. My neck and shoulder are still killing me.” I looked upward with a cringe.
Chris had at least assisted me with that part, helping me wrap long swaths of purple, black, and gold organza over the inner ridgepole of the tent, swagging it out to the surrounding sides along with what felt like thousands of strands of white twinkle lights. The entire ceiling was a starfield-backdrop for the four dramatic white chandeliers hanging down the center. The only job we had after they were up, was swapping out the plain candelabra bulbs for ones that flickered, which meant me, perched on top of an extremely tall ladder with my brother only mildly concerned for my safety. Once that was completed, he bailed on me and I’d been trying to make a dent in the rest of what was left… which was a lot!

Dee stepped between us and looked up at Kyle with an unimpressed brow raise. “What part of ‘There you go’ are you having a problem comprehending? You had a dance. It’s done. She’s not into you. Now go away.”

“Ever think you girls could use an attitude adjustment?” He chuckled and then nodded back toward the rest of Dee’s girlfriends. “All of you here without dates? I can see why.”

“Wow. You’re an even bigger clueless moron than I suspected.” Dee smirked back at him. “Our worlds do not revolve around you or what you think. Now run along, little boy.” She flicked the tips of her fingers, shooing him away before taking my hand and walking over to the bleachers with me. “God, he’s such a pain in the butt. I’m convinced it’s a brain injury of some sort.”

“I probably shouldn’t have given into him on that dance, huh?” I sighed and carefully smoothed the back of my dress down before sitting. “I just figured that maybe it would be an olive branch of sorts and he’d stop being so damn creepy.”
