I also secretly envisioned our band playing here. A sea of excited fans, our own line of merch, photos, and press interviews. It was small peanuts compared to our ultimate goal, but I’d still happily take it as a stepping stone… or I would have if Chris hadn’t messed everything up.

I sighed to myself and looked back down at the face of my girl, bending to give her a kiss even as her teeth chattered and she burrowed closer for warmth. The wind had picked up bringing along millions of skin-prickling snowflakes and even with my coat on, I was feeling chilled so I could only imagine how Rachel and Dee were handling this. She smiled up at me though, excitement and mirth in her eyes as I tried to wrap my coat partially around her.

“They should open the doors any minute now and then we’ll thaw you out inside.” I glanced up at the entrance to the building for a moment.

“Are you the type that needs to be front and center?” Rachel asked with a visible shiver. “Because I’m not so sure I can run right now,” she added with a laugh.

“Don’t!” she hissed out, her eyes wide with fear.

“What do you mean, don’t?”

She looked past me toward the front door before her head whipped to the left to peer through the large windows looking out into the inky blackness of the orchard behind the house. She released me, lunging for the hall where she hurriedly hit the light switches, dowsing us in near darkness.

“Mom?” I could barely make her out against the hallway wall, clutching her hands to her chest as she whispered something. I’d never seen her like this before. It was starting to freak me out more than that box in the kitchen. I approached her slowly. “Mom?”

“Did I lock it? Tell me I locked it!” Her terrified whisper gave me instant chills and made me look to my right toward the front door. I’d left it open for her so she wouldn’t have to struggle getting in if her arms were full. She obviously thought someone was around and now I was wondering if someone was inside.

6. #Octember Not sure about Rachel, but Shawn had a bear stuffie he kept until he was around 15. His friends teased him one to many times about it, so it met its fate down the garbage disposal. Still gets called Bearrison though (surname: Harrison). Yeah, he's thrilled about that. lol

“Don’t look up at the ceiling! God can’t help you. He’s too busy with starving children!” Mr. Vacanti’s thick Italian accent rattled off the mirrored walls. I’d just finished a line of piqué turns across the dance studio floor, flubbed the ending, and stood with my hands on my hips as I muttered at the fluorescent lights, thoroughly annoyed with myself. “Again! You should be leading with your toe. What is this thing you are doing with your knee? Are you injured? Are you going lame? Come on now! Again!” he demanded.

I closed my eyes for a moment as I tried to catch my breath before I danced the long line of turns and steps; spotting against my reflection as I twirled across the floor. “Fuck,” I breathed when I finished and bent over with my hands on my knees, exhausted and mildly dizzy.

“If you go wrong, don’t say ‘fuck’. Ballet is a silent art. Mouth it.” Mr. Vacanti shook his head as he grinned, amused with his ongoing torture no doubt. He walked over to a sophisticated stereo system setup against the wall and primed the piece of music he’d been having me practice jumps to.

“Fuck!” I mouthed to myself as instructed, unsure where I’d even find the energy to do what he was requesting of me now.

“We’re gonna be fine. Just a bump in the road is all. I’ll keep working at the solos and hopefully, we’ll either find a new lead or I’ll embrace the role myself. Trust me, it’s good this happened now before we get any further into things like record contracts and all that binding legal shit.”

“Chris is pretty pissed,” Dee unsuccessfully tried to stifle a giggle. “Mouth like a sailor for over a week now, doors being slammed nearly off their hinges, and music blaring on the other side of the wall at all hours.”

“Yeah, well… That’s on him. Gave him plenty of chances.” I shook my head and then glanced behind us as the crowd pressed us more against the front of the stage.
It was growing louder every passing second and I figured we had about ten more minutes before the show would begin. I looked at Rachel who was staring up at the stage, admiring the lighting trusses and amplifiers.

“Can’t wait to see you guys up there.” She looked over at me with a smile. “It’s gotta be addictive, you know? Could you imagine if this was your show? All these people here just to see you?”

“The thought is not unpleasant.”

I looked down at the flower in its plastic case, unsure if I really wanted to look at what accompanied it, but it seemed Dee was going to decide this for me. She popped the top open, fished out the note, and handed it to me as she sat down.

“Let’s see what he’s got to say.”

I set the box in my lap and opened the small piece of pale blue paper, finding his scrawled handwriting across it, though far more legible than I’d seen it in the past.
I’m so sorry I ruined tonight for you.
You look beautiful… as always.
I handed the note over to Dee and looked down at the flower. It was pretty and something I’d always had the silliest romantic notions about as a kid. A handsome man would give me a single flower, sweep me off my feet into a romantic dance, and seal it all with a toe-curling kiss. So much for fairytales.

Shawn chuckled and motioned for me to go ahead of him, lifting the box up the two steps and giving it a shove out door past me. The other five followed suit. “Where’s all your muscles, eh? You shake pom-poms for hours at games. You should be packin’ some serious guns,” he teased.
“Not sure that’s how it works.” I laughed as I opened the box nearest me and pulled out a black tablecloth, holding it patiently while Shawn looked around the interior of the massive white tent erected over the space.
“Holy shit, hon!” He laughed. “How in the hell did you do everything up there?” He pointed up at the vaulted ceiling. “Rent a cherry picker?”
“Oh, we are not speaking of that traumatizing decorating adventure. My neck and shoulder are still killing me.” I looked upward with a cringe.
Chris had at least assisted me with that part, helping me wrap long swaths of purple, black, and gold organza over the inner ridgepole of the tent, swagging it out to the surrounding sides along with what felt like thousands of strands of white twinkle lights. The entire ceiling was a starfield-backdrop for the four dramatic white chandeliers hanging down the center. The only job we had after they were up, was swapping out the plain candelabra bulbs for ones that flickered, which meant me, perched on top of an extremely tall ladder with my brother only mildly concerned for my safety. Once that was completed, he bailed on me and I’d been trying to make a dent in the rest of what was left… which was a lot!

Dee stepped between us and looked up at Kyle with an unimpressed brow raise. “What part of ‘There you go’ are you having a problem comprehending? You had a dance. It’s done. She’s not into you. Now go away.”

“Ever think you girls could use an attitude adjustment?” He chuckled and then nodded back toward the rest of Dee’s girlfriends. “All of you here without dates? I can see why.”

“Wow. You’re an even bigger clueless moron than I suspected.” Dee smirked back at him. “Our worlds do not revolve around you or what you think. Now run along, little boy.” She flicked the tips of her fingers, shooing him away before taking my hand and walking over to the bleachers with me. “God, he’s such a pain in the butt. I’m convinced it’s a brain injury of some sort.”

“I probably shouldn’t have given into him on that dance, huh?” I sighed and carefully smoothed the back of my dress down before sitting. “I just figured that maybe it would be an olive branch of sorts and he’d stop being so damn creepy.”

3. #LGBTQwriteathon Well... survived the week leading up to vacation so that's a plus. No words written yet as there's still a long flight looming. But a 'doggy area' was assembled in under 30 mins and last minute shopping is complete so I'm calling this week a 'win'.
