Saddened to learn of the death of my dear friend Malcolm Edwards, my first British editor, who in my opinion had no equal in the language. Not only brilliant and deeply kind, but superbly comical as well.

Our Ultion front door lock cylinder fell out as I was opening it this morning and locked us in. The man from the local firm who fitted the door last year has been around - had never seen the problem before but did a bit of professional jiggling and he was able to open the door. New lock fitted.

There was a good discussion of this recently on the War Movie Theatre podcast (actually the second time they’ve discussed it). I visited the village it was shot in, Turville, a couple of years ago. Still looks pretty much as it does in the film.

Morning all. Schoolboy in his living room posing for the photographer, Pepys Estate, Deptford. Photographer Tony Ray-Jones, 1966. Note the Subbuteo game under the couch and Parsley the lion on the TV.

Thanks for the quick reply. Eek, that’s depressing to hear. It’s on BFI Player now although not everyone will have access to that of course.

Hi chaps. Loving the pod. Rewatched Andrzej Wajda’s KANAL yesterday, after a visit to the Warsaw Uprising Museum, and feel it’s very much in your wheelhouse. A very bleak film but superbly realised. Stunning debut performance by Theresa Izewska, who was never allowed to leave Poland subsequently.

Yes, seen it all and it’s exactly that. They leave Svalbard for the last ep sadly, so no nice vistas.

And now I’ve rewatched KANAL and am pleased to report it’s as great as I remembered - and among the bleakest of WW2 films, perhaps only outstripped by COME AND SEE? Teresa Izewska in one of the great debut performances - but tragically thereafter banned from foreign travel, leading to her suicide.

Oh, wow, respect to her. It’s an evocative museum, darkly lit, with a complex layout. I found the timeline a little difficult to follow in places but should have probably have done more prior research. There was emphasis on women’s involvement. Well attended yesterday. A grim story.

Visited the Warsaw Uprising Museum this morning and it reminded me how much I really need to rewatch Wajda’s KANAL.

They were quite eclectic programmers and I was happy to explore the outer edges. So, CAN, King Crimson (Larks Tongue), Faust and Henry Cow, Gong and Hatfield and the North, Genesis, Yes, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Magma, Wishbone Ash…

I remember next to nothing about them - I suspect I was mostly in the bar for a 16 year old pint. I’ve never got on their wavelength either, although I can do twee. I recall liking Stray. Groundhogs were great.

I saw Groundhogs live in 1972 supported by Gentle Giant and Stray. They were the loudest band I saw until Swans at the Town and Country Club in 1987.

Growing up in Bath in the 60s and 70s we knew of the Jane Austen connection but it was never really exploited. The Austen Centre opened in 1999 - no doubt inspired by the P&P TV series - and now the annual Festival brings hundreds of people, cosplaying in the streets. Brilliant marketing!

Just read that in 1663, Isaac Newton attended the Stourbridge Fair and bought a book on astrology, which he couldn’t make sense of as he didn’t know enough geometry. So he started to study Euclid.

Rich, I bow to your tenacity and good humour over all these years. It’s been a hell of an achievement which you can look back on with pride. It’s been a lot of fun, although I can’t imagine what compiling the lists must have been like! Thanks for all your hard work x

Yes, I was also coming here to recommend The Fifth Head of Cerberus or a short story collection as entry points. Wolfe can be challenging and opaque but also funny, usually slyly. This is a man who wrote stories called The Death of Dr Island, The Island of Doctor Death and The Dr of Death Island.
