#LFF2026 Sandra Hüller’s ROSE has fought in the Thirty Years’ War as a man and goes to claim the land of a friend who died, hoodwinking the villagers. But she has to take a wife - and a baby is expected. Markus Schleinzer films in ascetic b&w and Hüller makes it work.

#LFF2026 THE BELOVED is the second excellent Javier Bardem performance of the Festival, playing a film director who invites his estranged daughter (Victoria Luengo) to star in his new film. Filmed mostly in alarming close-up by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, let’s say old wounds are reopened.

#LFF2026 THE DEVILS confirms that it is Ken Russell’s best work in this highly welcome uncut version finally showing after 55 years. It’s still an unrelenting, gruelling experience (in a good way) rooted by Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave but with greatness across the crew. Murray Melvin!

#LFF2026 Marie Kreutzer’s GENTLE MONSTER depicts a woman finding out her husband has been downloading illegal images when the police knock on her door, but despite Lea Seydoux and Laurence Rupp’s best efforts the film never really catches fire. Music score by that fine chanteuse Camille is welcome.

#LFF2026 - Florian Zeller again proves himself a master of directing interiors in BUNKER but the story of an architect and his wife falling out, although always involving, is irritatingly schematic and ends in unnecessary silliness. Bardem and Cruz bring their A game. Enjoyed Paul Dano’s billionaire

#LFF26 - THE DREAMED ADVENTURE (odd title) doesn’t reach the heights of Valeria Grisebach’s last film, WESTERN, but is compelling in its lengthy (and sometimes baggy) account of criminality on the Bulgarian / Turkish border. From the non-professional cast, lead Yana Radeva inevitably stands out.

Remembering when John Malkovich once shot a film only half a mile from here - Colour Me Kubrick - in which he walked across the road into the chemists.

Fantastic night out at Wilton’s Music Hall in the East End - Incendiary: Samuel Pepys in Words and Music. Extracts from the Diary and accompanying music, superbly delivered. The best night I’ve had at the theatre this year.

There was a good discussion of this recently on the War Movie Theatre podcast (actually the second time they’ve discussed it). I visited the village it was shot in, Turville, a couple of years ago. Still looks pretty much as it does in the film.

Hi chaps. Loving the pod. Rewatched Andrzej Wajda’s KANAL yesterday, after a visit to the Warsaw Uprising Museum, and feel it’s very much in your wheelhouse. A very bleak film but superbly realised. Stunning debut performance by Theresa Izewska, who was never allowed to leave Poland subsequently.

Oh, wow, respect to her. It’s an evocative museum, darkly lit, with a complex layout. I found the timeline a little difficult to follow in places but should have probably have done more prior research. There was emphasis on women’s involvement. Well attended yesterday. A grim story.

Visited the Warsaw Uprising Museum this morning and it reminded me how much I really need to rewatch Wajda’s KANAL.

Growing up in Bath in the 60s and 70s we knew of the Jane Austen connection but it was never really exploited. The Austen Centre opened in 1999 - no doubt inspired by the P&P TV series - and now the annual Festival brings hundreds of people, cosplaying in the streets. Brilliant marketing!

Accompanied our daughter and two week old grandson to the town centre today and literally dozens of people stopped and cooed. The fascinating impact of the new born.

Love how in the last episode of Beef s2 (Netflix) a character in Seoul shouts out of a car to a woman on the street named Hae-mi to distract attention - a clear reference to the woman who goes missing in Lee Chang-dong’s Burning.

Watching the video of Bath City FC’s Supporters Society SGM about the proposed takeover and supporter Ken Loach stands up to make some points, just like he was in one of his own films.

I had the pleasure of being at Lord’s when Ben Stokes scored the fastest Test century there in 2015 and again at the Ashes Test in 2023 when he scored that irate 155. Two of my best ever days watching cricket. What a player. Irreplaceable.

Pleased to find I’m staying in Hamburg round the corner from the Markthalle, site of a stunning and violent Clash gig I was at in the late 70s. Strummer was sick of being gobbed at and an offender got a guitar in his head after refusing to stop. Carried out with blood streaming from the wound.
