Our third preprint of the summer is up now! We use our piezoelectric crush method of head-specific traumatic brain injury (TBI) to identify which glial subtypes activate AP-1 after TBI and how glial subtype AP-1 activation affects survival. 🧪 🪰 #wewouldhurtafly doi.org/10.64898/202...

Now our paper is out on bioRxiv🎉 Huge thanks to my PI @annikabarber.bsky.social for her guidance throughout this project, to Deniz and Peter for invaluable advice on implementing LABL, and to my amazing co-authors and the whole Barber lab for their support! Comments and feedback are welcome!

Work from a talented postdoc in my neighboring lab! Bipin and the whole Irvine lab are great neighbors and helpful colleges. 🪰 🧪

Got an obnoxious little finding you'd otherwise shelve? We did our first @micropub7n.bsky.social and it was a 10/10 experience! Find out why you should use caution if deploying Repo-GeneSwitch-Gal4 for investigating fly sleep. Led by @seakelly5.bsky.social & @keisukefukumura.bsky.social

Do not doubt that my lab would try this. I joked once that they could either do short talks or an interpretive dance about the fly brain circadian clock circuit. And they picked dance. There were props. One actor played the sun. 🧪😂🧠⏰💃

I survived the most dangerous place in Tokyo. Not the Shibuya crossing - the 12 floor Itoya store! 💸

We didn’t win the institute snow globe contest, but we had fun doing arts and crafts! And paying tribute to the cobra chickens of campus.
A paper poster snow globe entitled “Busch Geese.” My dog goose and three Canada geese are making a snowman. Snowflakes fall with faces of lab members inside.

Barber Lab representing at #CSHLDros! 🪰 4/5 of us have posters tonight.
Five people stand on the grass in front of a sunset. They somehow are all in shades of blue. They also are all in the Barber lab.

It’s time for the fly party with my fly friends! #CSHLDros
A cartoon from smbc captioned “the life of a scientist sounds way more fun if you describe it like you’re a 6 year old.” The scientist in the cartoon is wearing glasses and a teal polo. Their speech bubble says “I like flies and me and my friends look at flies all the time and sometimes the flies are neat and we tell our other friends about it and our friends also like flies and sometimes we have fly parties and so no we know a lot about flies.” The original cartoon said rocks, Annika photoshopped in flies.

Proud of my postdoc and his undergrad mentee for winning poster awards in their respective categories at the Waksman retreat! 🤩 A wonderful day of great science and great company.

Although @keisukefukumura.bsky.social already bought the CHONKIEST stir bar I’ve seen in my life for stirring our high fat food while it simmers, I’m hoping this might be an even easier way to get a good emulsion going for our special diets! Worst case, we try making soy milk. 😂
